For many individuals the number of years it takes to become a Physician was a factor that made them choose another profession within health care community. Of course this was prior to the Internet's existence, which has changed everything in the academic world by making the possibility for a higher education more attractive and obtainable.
The popularity of the career choice to becoming a physician's assistant has steadily increased in the last several years and is directly related to the need to keep health care costs down. Choosing to enroll into an online degree program does not mean that the quality of your educators is less than that of a traditional campus. Both programs are similar in nature and will require you to study hard.
As with any type of school that you are investigating to see if their program will provide you with the necessary education required, you need to make sure whether or not they have current legitimate accreditation. This would be obtained from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician's Assistant (ARC-PA). This is a mandatory requirement for anyone wanting to take their state's exam to get a license in order to become employed.
Another area that is a general requirement or anyone wanting to enroll in a master's program is that their bachelor's degree is in a field of study associated with health care. Many schools may also have a minimum grade point average allowed for enrollment.
After you have jumped through all the required hoops that have completed your registration, the real work will begin. Your degree program will include subjects such as human anatomy, pharmacology, biochemistry and skills needed in a clinical setting. Although your classroom requirements can be completed online you will also need to complete a clinical rotation in order for you to get real clinical experience.
The average time needed for a master's degree is roughly two years but depending upon the online program that you have selected, you can fast track in order to graduate sooner. Of course after you graduate you will go on to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination and after you pass it you will be ready to start your chosen career.
However, there are several areas for which extra training, through traditional or online school, is necessary. Along with the requirement of obtaining a certification of specialty from the NCCPA, you will need to be in "training" for up to two years. At the end of your educational journey you will emerge with a career that is very much respected and will be rewarding many ways including providing you with a great income!
