Online college pursuits might be an affordable option for high school graduates, as well as the many adults who are continuing their education. Students enrolling in online college degree programs don't have to worry about costs for room and board, meal plans and commuting. Since some distance degree programs can be paid in monthly, no-interest installments, students might not even have to pay all their tuition money up front.

With a computer and Internet access, students can participate in online college studies on their own time, at their own place and while still making time for work that can help pay for tuition. And even with tuition costs increasing annually, at least one institution with online college offerings reports that it has kept tuition costs steady so that full-time undergraduate studies for a year cost less than $6,000. Recently the Obama administration has reorganized and expanded financial aid offerings and tax credits that for the most part apply to continued education as a whole.

Finding an affordable online school offering doesn't mean students should compromise quality. Rising numbers of online college programs have brought about an increase in what's known as "diploma mills", according to the U.S. Department of Education. Institutions that charge money for worthless degrees, diplomas and certificates where the student has to produce little to no academic work should be avoided.

Many online schools are accredited by one of six regional accreditation boards. When an online school is accredited, students are more likely to be able to transfer credits and obtain financial aid, the U.S. Department of Education suggests. Financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships, fellowships and work study programs can help offset the costs of tuition, and are for most a necessary part of the educational experience.

Colleges and universities often offer scholarships for students to enroll in programs at their institutions. Students can also look toward community groups, chambers of commerce, non-profit organizations and large companies that extend scholarships and fellowships for on campus and online degree programs. Some scholarships and fellowships are awarded based on financial need, area of study, academic grade level, demographics or a combination of factors such as these. What the student receives is contingent upon their meeting eligibility requirements, different for each form of aid.

The federal government offers work study participation in exchange for tuition, as well as a Pell grant that has this year been expanded to provide students with financial needs up to $5,000-plus for tuition. Grant money, like fellowships and scholarships, typically doesn't have to be repaid, but there will always be stipulations that accompany the awarded monies.

Students can also obtain federal government loans that are awarded through the financial aid offices of schools and that don't require credit checks or collateral. The loans don't have to be repaid until after graduation, and the debt can be forgiven after a certain number of years in instances where payments are made on time.

To determine eligibility for the various forms of government financial aid, students can complete an online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students enrolled in college online or on campus might also benefit from a Lifetime Learning tax credit and an American Opportunity Tax Credit. Tuition, higher education fees, student loan interest and employer-required education expenses are also tax deductible.

Finding the appropriate aid to help fund the accredited college degree program of your choice is a matter of research, paperwork, and eligibility. With the many forms of aid available, and the many online classes offered, obtaining the best degree online means combining aid and education into one complete package.
