What do you do if you are in the military and stationed in some remote location half way around the planet? How can you get the college education you need to advance your career or help you prepare for life after the service? What if you're a mom or dad with young children and you can't afford daycare and college at the same time? Or if you're just like so many of us who need to work to support families and personal responsibilities, but you need that degree to achieve career success? You learn online, of course!

Remember "mail order degrees"? If you're a fan of old TV shows from the 50's, 60's and 70's, you might remember some character or another announcing their "degree" to a roomful of their friends or family. Such an announcement was usually cause for some hilarious situation that was bound to happen when it was found out that the "degree" was from a non-existent school in a country no one had ever heard of.

In TV land and, in some cases in real life, those degrees were always fake. What was fact, however, was the University of Wisconsin offering over 450 programs via mail in 1958 and over 12,000 students participating in these courses through the mail. Online schools have simply taken this method of relaying college class information and ramped it up through the use of the Internet. This makes attending classes even easier for working people, most of whom don't have the luxury of leaving a job to get an education.

If you're a certain age, you might remember when computers took up entire rooms and these were computers that did a lot less than a typical iPhone. When technology advanced, and computer size shrunk as power increased, to the point that we could have a personal computer in our house, the universities that were at the forefront of research took advantage of this access. Though initially the brainchild of the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), the Internet allowed unparalleled access to information.

No longer the punch line of comedy routines, the number of those getting a degree online is growing. Currently, women comprise 67% of the student body and a lot of these students are working moms. Because college classes can be taken at a distance, our active duty military men and women are continuing their education while they perform their duties. Those currently in the work force who may have an associate's degree or a bachelor's are returning to school to get the degrees they need to advance in their careers.

Since the 1990's, accredited online education has been recognized by both the federal government and state governments. They, in turn, have made financial aid available for students to begin or continue their college experience online. The list of accredited institutions continues to grow, even if may have begun small with just the University of Wisconsin. From local community colleges to Ivy League schools, students can take classes online from anywhere with an Internet connection.

Worried about communicating with your teacher? Don't be. It has been found that communication between professor and student is actually enhanced through the use of e-mail. Teachers tend to respond faster and students get the answers they need. You won't miss study partners either as online forums and study groups are pretty much standard these days. With students being able to access their textbooks online to files from a library half way across the world, it's easy to understand why online college participation is growing.

With the advent of devices like the iPhone and iPad and now with the ebook readers such as the Kindle, the field of online education continues to evolve. Taking a course "anywhere" has a literal meaning with satellite communications. We may remember snail mail courses fondly, if not with a small bit of frustration at the delay, but what we now experience is lightning fast learning and college grants and scholarships that help us get our college degree.
