It’s a fact of life in college: English composition is a requirement.
Most colleges require a minimum of two English composition (ENC 1101)
classes in order to graduate, with the exception of trade or vocational
schools.
English comp is critical to students and graduates because
the remainder of their course work will be based on the skills they
attain in their composition classes.
However, students don’t just use the skills from English composition in
college. They will utilize those skills in their work and home life
for the remainder of their lives.
Even simple tasks like writing a
lucid complaint letter or a thank you note would be difficult to
accomplish without the basic writing skills learned in a composition
class. In business, employees are frequently asked to write letters
that explain or persuade a certain viewpoint. Employers need to hire
people who have good written communication skills.
The desired outcome of ENC 1101 is to create students who can read and
write at a fluent literacy level. Even though reading and writing are
critical, that’s not all they will do. Students may also read and
write poetry, and recite it aloud in order to be able to differentiate
the fine distinctions between written and verbal communication.
Many English composition classes have students watch film adaptations
of the novels or other works they are reading. Two examples would be
Romeo and Juliet and Jane Eyre, which both have had several film
adaptations made.
Students may have to write papers on the differences
between the film and the original work, and if they think the
differences had an impact of the meaning of the work. This kind of
work can help a student craft persuasive and clear critical analysis.
Being able to write an essay or paper that persuades the reader to a
certain point of view is very important in college. That’s because
most college classes require written essays or papers from students.
Writing an essay can show a professor that the student can understand
and analyze the material that the class has been studying.
English composition classes also teach students another invaluable
skill: how to reason thoughtfully. When students write essays or
papers, they can be sure that they will be read thoroughly to make sure
that students have proven their point with evidence from the text or
source material. Being able to craft and prove a thesis is the major
goal in written essays.
Students also need to practice correct grammar and punctuation. The
grammatical structure of a paper is imperative to its clarity.
Students also learn to use a stylebook, which shows them how to
properly format their papers and bibliographies.
Usually, English
students use the MLA stylebook, but other disciplines like the sciences
utilize other styles like APA; in any case, students will learn to
utilize a stylebook no matter the discipline.
English composition classes from free colleges will help students once they graduate
because it will help them craft resumes and cover letters that are
persuasive. Being able to write well thanks to going to college for free is a skill that every kind of
business needs in its employees. Successfully completing ENC 1101 will
help students carve a path in the business world that leads to
promotions and raises.
