The west with its influence has given lots  of new sort of problems along with their fashion, lifestyle etc; For example now a days we hear a lot of  young people suffering from depression. This is just similar to the headache syndrome in youngsters.

Now at times it is true that a person is suffering from depression, but often people try to show off by telling people that they are in depression, which according to them is a high society illness. And they are quite successful in gaining attention. What they don't realize is that one doesn't goes into depression so easily. And also that it doesn't get cured so easily. Or to put it down in proper words, depression is just like any other serious medical condition, caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals along with other factors. This does need medication like that of anti-depressants but taking them unnecessarily can be harmful for health as they directly affect the brain's functioning.

Often we feel sad and gloomy but that doesn't necessarily means that we are suffering from depression. It is when your daily routine and activities start getting affected. When you aren't able to concentrate, have difficulty in making decisions, feel irritated for no reason. And when you are continuously feeling sad and energy less for more than two weeks, it is then an alarming situation.

And as quoted on the website depression.com, most people describe it as, "it feels like a black curtain of despair coming down over their lives".

And though many people won't seek for a treatment but they would definitely respond to it.

But that's not all. Alongwith the person undergoing depression, people around him are also affected by his behavior and the irregularities caused by it. His friends, family, colleagues thus everyone in his surrounding or interacting with him gets affected by it. Thus it is recommended that people should be kind and helpful towards such an individual. Also the individual itself should be open with discussing problems with friends and closed ones. Rather than adopting harmful habits like overeating, drinking or harming one. But incase of severe conditions there are always psychiatrists available which would recommend proper medication and therapies as required.

Stating a fact, depression is seen more common in women then men. Mainly due to Biological, life cycle, hormonal and psychosocial factors unique to women and according to a research it has been deduced that hormones directly affect brain chemistry that controls emotions and mood. Therefore women may experience depression after birth or due to past depressive episodes or also due to the condition of premenstrual syndrome, resulting from the hormonal changes that typically occur around ovulation and before menstruation begins. During the transition into menopause, some women experience an increased risk for depression.

Whereas with men, situation is quite different. They may cope differently with the symptoms. Comparatively men are more likely to acknowledge having fatigue, irritability, loss of interest in once-pleasurable activities, and sleep disturbances. They also are more prone to adopting habits like drinking, being aggressive and abusive at times. And usually throw themselves at their work rather than talking to family and friends about the problem, thus being egoistic of being a man.

Other than that talking generally, every  other person undergoes depression due to various reasons, it maybe genetic or a sudden trauma, for e.g. loss of a loved one, a parent, spouse etc. also the  family and social environment and  at  times some sort of  medications  too.

Mostly depression is cured and is controlled and finally eliminated, but it is more likely that a person having prior depression episode, may get it again. And if not taken seriously it can get severe and may lead the patient to think about suicide even out of feelings of worthlessness and despair.

Though depression often struck people, but it is different  from the mood swings and  regular sadness that one experience  from a lost  job, break-up, failure in examination or not  being selected  for the  team. These are brief and go away with time. But here we are talking about a prolonged condition of illness and grief which needs to be treated properly.
