What's The Best Way To Sleep?

My patients usually ask me -"What is the best way to sleep?" to which I always answer: "Well, what position do you sleep in?" The reason for this reply is that just be modifying a couple of things here and there, you can get a restful and comfortable night's rest no matter what position you actually sleep in.

Back Sleepers
Yes, this is actually the preferred position to sleep because it places the least amount of stress to your spine-IF you:

Place a cervical roll or rolled-up towel under your neck. Make sure that your head is in a neutral position (that you are neither looking up or down). If you find that you cannot be "in neutral" then you need a smaller roll.

Place a pillow under your knees-This takes stress off of your lower back. You could buy a special pillow for this, but a regular pillow works just fine.

Side Sleepers
If you sleep on your side, then follow these tips to minimize the amount of stress to your spine.

Use a cervical pillow-Ideally, the pillow should take into account how wide your shoulders are-the wider your shoulders, the taller the pillow should be. This is because you want to keep your neck in a neutral position.Place a pillow between your knees. Not only will this feel more comfortable, if you have hip joint pain-this definitely helps.Try not to sleep on your side with your arm up over your head-this causes stress on the nerves that come out of the neck and into the arms and cause tingling or numbness down the arms.

Sleep on your Belly-
This position places the most stress on your neck. In this position you have your head turned to one side or the other for hours at a time. This is quite stressful to your neck muscles and joints.

Your body will try to shift your position to compensate. This is why people who toss and turn the most are belly sleepers.

To sleep more comfortably (belly sleepers):
Place a pillow under your waist, and do not use a pillow for your head. Remember that there are other variables that will affect the quality of your sleep, like the condition and firmness of your mattress. If your mattress is too old it will sag and not provide enough support.

Avoid super-soft mattresses-they may feel comfortable at the beginning, but in the mornings, the lack of support will make you feel sore. Your mattress should be firm, but not hard to provide the adequate support.

As with anything, if any of these recommendations cause you increased pain, consult your chiropractor-there may be other factors present that should be checked by a professional.

Believe that you do the best you can everyday. Take a moment to realize that everything will be waiting for you to tackle it the next day, but right now is time for sleep. I work hard and I do my best with all I can, I aim to take that attitude to everything I do. Sleep is included, in fact its something I excel at. :)

I think comfortable bed in nice bedroom, with good fresh air is important for sleep. Position is more individual thing, as you mentioned.
Before sleep to think in your mind through the day and plan the shortly next day.

It's good to prepare sleep already 1-2 hours before. Reading or nice music is giving good relaxed feeling. Sauna or bath 1-2 hours before is giving relaxed feeling.

If you seen any dreams during your sleep, it's good to think what they could mean to you.

Sweet dreams!

"Best" for what (health? resting?)?

To me, the best is to sleep when I am really sleepy.

And one definite important condition - fresh air - I always sleep with window open, even in minus temperatures.

After spending a lively night with scrumptious food, impeccable wine and great friends?

I place a pillow between my knees for support because I like to sleep on my side. It takes the stress off of the pelvis, hips and lower back.

Try following:
1. put ur feet in warm water with salt for some time.
2. keep ur head towards north or east.
3. if u sleep facing right side down then u hv more cooler body/mind but if u sleep facing left side down u may have more warmer body/mind effect.
if u hv cough then sleep left side down or if u feeling hot then other way.
it is said -left nose is moon & right is sun. so one side breathing has warm effect while other has colder.
4. if married keep ur wife on left side if u wish to make love.
if u r spiritual type or wish to meditate then sleep right side down.
5. if u r not comfortable with head direction then try diff direction by hit n trial till u reach a sound sleep.
6. Last no matter how worried u r -try to recite ur lord or god name few times n in few mins u will be yawning & sleep
7.believe it or not- space, direction n orientation can change drastically your thinking , mind & comfort.
It probably has no science or logic but it works !!!
Try 1 by 1 & Test & inform if it works.

For me the best sleep I get is when I go to my medicine cabinet and mix and combine ALL the different prescription pills in my cabinet. That is a joke. For some it's not. I try to keep a regular sleep schedule and live a stress free life. This really has a lot to do with a good night sleep. I DO NOT watch the news before I go to sleep. I don't watch the news anymore AT ALL. I mean people are saying that CNN is now called Constantly Negative News. In between that is commercial after commercial pushing drugs that might harm you. Am I the only one that sees this? How in the H can you get a good night sleep thinking that you might die if you don't take a pill and then have to listen to stories of people dying before you try to go to sleep. GEEEEZZ... No wonder people grind their teeth at night, but that is ok because there is another pill to help that. 'Have to listen" is the key phrase. You don't.

Dan DeReuter is oversimplifying, by a HUGE margin. He claims that, changing only where you put your pillow or aim your head, you can sleep well no matter what your position.

Then he names three positions.

None of which apply to me.

Due to a recent traffic accident, I have not been able to sleep lying down since the end of November. So I have slept in a chair for over two months -- poorly.

So the moral of this short story? Choose your words carefully, for they have specific meaning. "No matter what position..."? Fatuous nincompoopery, which prompts me to disregard all further words from that source.

Why is it you can fall sound asleep on the couch while watching t.v?
You wake up to go to bed - and find yourself wide awake. Counting sheep.

Based on this, maybe the couch. Just pop another movie in!

My favorite thing to do is listen to my Bedtime Beats CD to put me to sleep. The music really calms me down and I fall off to sleep rather quickly especially after a crazy day. You should check out their site.
