Passport renewal is easiest to do it by mail. It can also be done in person. In order to meet the requirements to renew by mail, you must have been more than 15 years of age when the existing passport was issued, the existing passport must be undamaged, and it must be less than 15 years old. The final requirement for renewal by mail is that you must not have had a name change since the previous passport was issued.

A passport card application can also be submitted by mail. It must be the first time you have applied for a passport card by mail and you must have complied with all the requirements for a mail-in passport. Be sure to use a sturdy mailing envelope and to mail the documents in a way that allows them to be traced. Don't expect to have your passport renewed if you have fallen behind in child support payments.

If your passport has been damaged, lost or stolen, you must apply for a new passport in person. The application and signature are prepared in the same way as with the original passport application. Don't sign until the passport agency representative approves it. You must show your valid social security card for approval of the application.

Proof of citizenship can be done by showing your existing passport. You may also present your naturalization papers or a certificate showing your citizenship. The valid and certified birth certificate is probably the most common type of documentation showing that you are a citizen of the United States.

Personal identification is required to receive passport renewal. Documentation can consist of a valid and current driver's license, a military identification card, a naturalization certificate, government ID card or an unblemished passport. A less commonly used form of identification proof is to ask someone with valid ID to vouch for you.

You must submit copies of your documentation on individual sheets of 8.5" by 11" white paper. The copies must be at least actual size, but they may be enlarged to readability. If there are two sides to the documentation, each side should appear on a separate page.

All required fees for the passport services you are ordering must be submitted with the documentation and application. You will usually be charged for the application approval by the passport agent. In addition, you must pay for the passport itself. Expedited delivery times to or from the passport issuing office will cost extra. You can submit fees using checks, credit card or money orders. Be aware that personal checks must clear the bank before the passport is issued.

Your passport application must be accompanied by 2" by 2" color photo. The picture can't include any head covering, such as a hat or scarf. Full face view is required. The photograph must show you in your normal appearance. If you wear glasses, the glasses should be in the photo. The same is true of hairpieces, wigs and hearing aids. If you wear tinted glasses by doctor's orders, you will need to submit that information along with the other documentation.
