One week you may need a visa, the next week you might not. Passports don't specifically allow you to enter the country, but it promises protection while abroad and allows you to return to the country that issued the passport. You probably won't ever have to deal with these details, but they're good to know. A passport is the only universally recognized form of identification, making them your lifeline when you travel to different countries.

Passports are valid for ten years for people older than sixteen and just five years for people under the age of sixteen. For visas this period can vary. Visas can be valid for up to ten years or their validity period could be as short as the length of your trip. Once a visa expires, a new one will be needed to re-enter the country. The same rule applies to passports. After your passport expires you will have to obtain a new one to travel abroad once more.
