The process required for obtaining a passport has become more complicated and comprehensive than ever before. This has happened in part because of increased border security measures that have been put in place since the attacks of September 11, 2001.

These new regulations are making some people hesitant to apply for a passport or for changes to their passport, but something like a passport name change does not have to be daunting.

There are several ways you can go about having your name changed on your passport or making other simple corrections. Most changes do not cost anything and require just a short form and some verification documentation. The services that have fees normally do not cost over $60 and these are normally expedited services or express shipping services. Passports do not have to cost a small fortune.

The first change that people need is a correction because the passport was actually issued with incorrect information on it. This change can be made at any time as long as the passport is valid. It is free to make this change. The form that should be used is the DS-5504. This can be found at any passport office or downloaded online. It is simple to send the form back out through the mail or just drop it right back off at the post office.

Another common change that people need is a name change. This is often needed if a marriage or divorce has taken place since the passport was issued. There is no fee for this change either unless expedited service is needed. The DS-5504 form must be used and it must be submitted one year or less after the passport was issued. This form can be easily printed out online and returned to your local post office. It can also be mailed to the address on the form.

If a name change must be made more than one year after the issue of the passport, a fee is imposed for the change. The DS-82 form must be used for these changes. This form can be picked up at a passport office or printed out on the passport website.

If additional Vista pages must be added there is no fee and this can be done anytime as long as the passport is valid. If expedited service is needed, a fee will be assessed by the passport agency. This is normally a small fee of only $60.

Passports normally cost $95 for the application and another $25 for issuance. To expedite a passport or for any changes to a passport it will cost $60. Citizenship can be verified for $60.00 and your passport book can be overnighted to you for under $15. These fees are not very high considering what you are paying for.

Most changes to passports are free of charge and can also be processed quickly if needed for a small fee. Making changes to your passport does not have to cause unneeded complications. Although it has become a bit more complicated to acquire a passport name change, it is still relatively easy to make changes to one.
