The Process Of Receiving A US Passport Application
A citizen or national of the United States will need to have a passport for international travel. While not difficult, the US passport application process will take a bit of your time and attention. Identification will have to be gathered and the form for applying will need to be properly completed. The first time this document is requested it must be done in person.
When you are ready to bring all of your information to a facility, you will find yourself at a government building even for a replacement passport. Usually this service is found in the clerk's court, the local post office, or even a library. For children under the age of 16, both parents need to be with the child when they are applying. If only one parent or a guardian is available, there are other more in-depth requirements that must be met. The parents should have a recent photo ID of the child.
The agency allows five kinds of documents to serve as primary ID. Naturalized citizens can present the certificate of naturalization. A driver's license that is current is acceptable and a military or government employee ID is valid. If you don't have any of these, you will have show several forms of ID to prove you are who you say you are.
The form used to apply is a DS-11, which originates from the Department of State. This can be found and filled out online or it can be printed and filled out by hand. Do not sign this form until you are told to do so at the appropriate office. You must submit this form in person.
If you have an old U. S. Passport that is in decent condition, it can be submitted for proof of citizenship. Alternatively, you will have to show a certified birth certificate from the state in which you were born. If you don't have one, you can request one from your birth state. It must be dated no more than a year past your birth date and be signed and stamped by the registrar.
Copies of the IDs must be supplied with the form. Both front and back must be shown on a standard-sized white piece of paper. Copy is to appear only on one side of the paper, no additional information should be on the paper. The copied image can be larger but not smaller than the original identification piece.
Fees will be collected when you apply. Money orders (bank drafts, international, currency exchanges, and U. S Postal), checks (personal cashiers, travelers, and certified), and credit or debit cards are all acceptable forms of payment. Exact cash is accepted at some locations but this should be verified before the appointment. Some acceptance facilities will require the execution fee to be paid separately from the application fee.
Two two-by-two inch colored photos must also be submitted. There are local establishments that can provide the photography that meets the government requirements. The photos must be identical, taken within the last six months, and be a true representation of the person's likeness.
Getting a U.S. passport application properly completed will take time and patience to make sure you have everything you need.
