The online passport application document for initial application differs from the application for passport renewal via mail. Both documents may be obtained from a local U.S. Post Office location, a Passport Acceptance Facility, or U.S. Passport Agency. The passport renewal process may be conducted entirely via mail only in certain circumstances.

Obtaining the application online is by far the easiest way and for those who are more computer-savvy, completing the application online is recommended. Once completed, the application should be printed out and submitted in-person to the proper agent in order to be processed. Additional documentation must be provided with the application.

The documentation includes proof of citizenship and identity. Documents such as a birth certificate and driver’s license will fulfill the requirements. These documents must either be shown to an authorized agent, provided in photocopy version, or both.

The applicant must present a certified birth certificate that contains a seal and signature of the city, county, or state registrar and must reflect the filing date. The applicant must also provide a driver’s license and a photocopy of it to the agent. Applicants who do not have a driver’s license may provide a government or military ID.

Some applicants may not possess any of this primary identification. In this case, Secondary identification should be provided in combination and may include a Social Security card, identification card provided by an employer, library card, and credit card. A witness may also present him or herself and complete an affidavit form. The witness must have known the applicant for at least two years and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

The documentation requirements are listed on the government and service provider Web sites. There are many alternatives if the first set of requested documentation is not available, so read carefully. These Web sites also list the various fees involved for passport processing and all additional fees charged by private service companies. Compare private companies in order to find a reputable one that offers low fees.

First-time passport applicants will need to visit an authorized agent in person. All applicants will need to compile the documents into one package and mail it to the service provider for processing. Two photos of the applicant must be included in the package.

These photos must meet certain requirements in order to be accepted for inclusion on the passport book. Check the Web sites for the photo specifications because they are very detailed.
