Marley and Me, starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, was by far, one of the best family movies that I have seen this year. Marley and Me is the real life story of John and Jenny Grogan, their family and Marley, their yellow Labrador retriever. John Grogan, who currently is living in rural eastern Pennsylvania, was the author of the book, Marley and Me.

I loved the book and when I heard that they were making this book into a movie, I was excited. First off, let me tell you about Marley, the subject of the book and the movie. Marley was one of the most excitable, out of control, happy go lucky dogs there ever was. If he had been a person, he would have probably been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder or be called hyperactive. This movie came out on Christmas Day 2008 and by the end of the holiday weekend, had grossed over thirty seven million dollars at the box office.

Marley eats holes in the wall, knocks over furniture, breaks ornaments and destroys blinds. He is particularly spooked by thunder storms and barks continuously during them. One scene involves Marley trying to jump out of a moving car. As Marley climbs out the window, John grabs his hind legs. They were on a busy road and couldn't pull over so Jenny slowed the car right down. Marley walked with his front paws on the road and his rear in the car.

The friends that I've consulted about their reactions to the movie had read the book, and so they were able to better appreciate the characters for what they were. While the characters are certainly loveable in their own right, the movie understandably can't quite get as personal as the book did. The book is almost journal-style, being about John Grogan himself and his family, and of course, their dog Marley.

When we left the theatre most of the people had tears in their eyes. It was a sad but very good movie. I really enjoyed it and may go see it again.
