Removing the arts is what Rounds is trying to roundup
I can't see music being carried away from our school systems! Music is one of the best things children can do for themselves, learning from voice, orchestra or band. This was once on a music program the benefits of having music in our kids' lives. They learn patience, mathematical skills, creativity, teamwork, concentration, and listening skills. They also have fun by learning the "Funky Chicken", or enriching their lives with opera or watching a ballet (where would Swan Lake" be without music?)
Some schools even have a team of kids that study all year long, and to learn Beethoven or Mozart, etc it's called Music Memory. They listen to songs, and learning the composers and the songs. It's like Name That Tune, but a little more "High Brow!"
Gee, do you want your kids to sit there with their Nintendo DS' all the time? Or do you want them to learn something, and use it later in life? One of the songs my daughter learned from "Music Memory" came on a commercial and she knew the composer, and the song. She didn't get that from her Nintendo DS; she learned that from a teacher who shared some pretty incredible music history. Appreciation for the arts!
(What would we listen to if we went down the highway, and there were no songs on the radio?) ESPN! Oh yeah, doesn't ESPN have a catchy musical score? HMM!
I think if you take away music or the arts, it would be the last of the great artists. We often get kudos for the performances that are held for orchestra when the guest conductor comes to Rapid City.
My oldest daughter has enjoyed band, orchestra, marching band, and has friends that are great musicians. Why would you take that away? The arts are wonderful outlets for kids to enjoy! My middle daughter plays 2 instruments (trombone and violin); she plays in orchestra on one, and in band on the other. Same goes with my youngest daughter who plays the trumpet in band, and the violin in orchestra.
Don't "blow it" for these great potential musicians! Find another way to keep your costs down such as starting from the top, and not from the bottom.
Please keep our kids in mind when making this hasty decision! Lastly, do you know why the Department of Defense supports the arts? Guess what- it's to keep our minds thinking about something other then war!
