Any industrial RO product water usually requires post treatment, regardless of the types of RO device, the chemical nature of the RO membrane, and the intended application of the water. Post treatment requirements depend primarily on the application and must be determined on a case-by case basis. For many industrial applications, post treatment consists of demineralization by means of ion exchange and disinfection with ultraviolet radiation.

Ion exchange is likely the most common process used to soften water. While there are some advantages to hard water such as taste and healthy minerals, most feel the disadvantages outweigh those advantages. Specifically, hard water interferes with the lathering and effectiveness of soaps and detergents in cleaning. High levels of hardness in water can also cause the staining and furring of fixtures and pipes.

It is generally recognized that any reverse osmosis membranes, like most other water treatment equipment, will need cleaning or flushing at some time during its useful life. Frequent cleaning is not required for properly designed and operated RO system. Membrane cleaning may be necessary when one of the following symptoms noticed:

Multimedia filters or sometimes called multi layers filters have proven design concept; the coarse media layers which are located in the top of the tank trap large particles, and successively smaller particles are captured in the finer layers of media deeper in the bed. This leads to a good result, highly efficient filtering since removal takes place throughout the entire bed.

Over the past three decades reverse osmosis has become a prominent method of solids liquid separation. Successful long-term performance of reverse osmosis (RO) systems primarily depends on three factors: proper pretreatment; adequate system design; and attention to operation and maintenance.

Chemical dosing systems are widely used in the treatment of water. In most cases, the dosing system consists of a metering pump and chemical tank. In some cases the system has a monitor or controller that measures, and even adjusts to measured levels of concentration.
