Marketing Public Relations: These two terms are often used interchangeably. Both are utilized in reaching a target demographic for whatever it is that is trying to be promoted. Public relations deals with reaching the "public" with ongoing "relations" in order to promote a product or brand. They may handle or deal with people in marketing to promote product or service. The main goal is "promotion".

The marketing department of a company usually handles matters such as advertising. Advertising is usually done through word of mouth, cold calling, or media venues such as print advertisements, infomercials and so on. Constant marketing and never being away from sight is vital in surviving.

Constant research is needed to keep up with the latest trends and the public needs and involvement. Talking to people, conducting surveys, and keeping up with the latest demands are all things that need to be aware of. Ideally, the marketing department handles the monetary matters. They are the ones to decide how to spend the marketing dollars. Often times, the "public" may go through public relations. Ideas or concerns may be expressed and it is an interactive process.

Marketing and public relations works in various venues. Job positions can be found in newspapers, advertising agencies, PR firms, television, and so on. It is crucial to have the connection to work together successfully to promote whatever it is that is being promoted. Communication is the key. Exchange of detailed information is an ongoing process that both parties need to do very well.

Let's say you were a golf magazine, and working as a marketing manager. You will work closely with a public relations specialist and benefit mutually. If you have a clientele base for professional golfers and golf courses, you will be handling how they spend their marketing dollars.

Also, the marketing public relations people may refer a golf course to you. It is their job to ensure the right publicity. They may go to your magazine for additional help.
