Vonage Pro Help or Hype

I'll hand it to Vonage for rolling out Vonage Pro. This is the name for their latest SoftPhone client. The idea of Vonage Pro is you get the advanced features such as conference calling/recording, personalized ring tones, and other advanced features. And it does this in sync with the VoIP connection located in the home or office.

And I have to say Vonage, I'm so underwhelmed.

I was one of your earliest cheerleaders, 6+ years ago. You we're the innovators. And Windows XP was new then too. Today, as far as leading innovation goes, Vonage, you could learn something from Microsoft. That's not a complement.

To be fair, I'm not singling you out, solo. Packet 8 VoIP doesn't seem to do be leaving you in the dust. They just have different issues. Such as the customers phone not ringing and just going to voice mail.

However Vonage, my heartburn with your firm is down right personal, for several reasons. You got me back as a customer when you called and offered a USB dongle that would let me take my Vonage phone number everywhere. I did tell you I was using a Mac.

So you took my money and lo, your stuff doesn't work on a Mac. I threw the dongle in a drawer after I read the Terms Of Service that the billing won't start till I start using Vonage. Which I cannot do because you don't do Mac.

And you change the game, and started billing me for a service I cannot use. Getting you gone was like getting away from AOL. Cannot do it, cannot stop the billing.

So let's fast forward to late 2008. I can assure you; Vonage has the worst call quality and uses the most bandwidth of any VoIP provider I have touched. Even Packet 8 is better, when it works.

Now let's look at Vonage Pro, which you are so proud of. Your offering some of the features (not all) that I have gotten from GrandCentral for 2 years. Oh yeah, not only does GC have more features, its free.

So if my VoIP provider goes south on me, like Sunrocket did, no one will ever be the wiser.

Maybe you're sorry for the slimy practices in your past. I cannot trust you Vonage. I would encourage others to learn from my bad experiences with your firm and pick someone else. Even Packet 8 is better than you. And that is not a complement.
