I've worked with MS Sharepoint since early releases and have recently started looking into Microsoft sharepoint training. Paramount to this conversation and prior to undertaking any Microsoft Sharepoint training is understanding the differences between sharepoint versions.  When Sharepoint was first released the versions were confusing and it was difficult to understand.  With the 2007 release Microsoft has narrowed the scope to Sharepoint Server and Office Sharepoint Server 2007.   Options for Microsoft Sharepoint Training include online self paced, CBT and instructor led.

Before investigating online Microsoft training it's important to have an overview of Windows sharepoint technologies.  At a high level WSS helps work teams stay connected anywhere by providing access to people, documents and the information they need to make better decisions.  Team members can share documents, track tasks, achieve efficiencies' through better use of email and easily share ideas and information.

Windows sharepoint services are a web platform that lets users create and manage their own web sites that let them share documents and information to projects and their teams.  WSS makes web site creation easy with the use of web parts which can be deployed into sharepoint sites.

Searching Online Microsoft training produced multiple options for Microsoft Sharepoint training.  Top benefits to Sharepoint include improving team productivity, managing documents, ease of integration, and custom solutions in a collaborative environment, maintaining document integrity, next level file sharing, and a cost effective foundation for building web based applications.    Microsoft provides excellent free content on their site and includes comprehensive instruction on working with lists, document libraries, web site management, meeting workspaces and managing user permissions.

Windows sharepoint services is a built in component in Windows Server 2003 and is installed and maintained with minimal administrative effort. Close integration with common tools, including the Microsoft office system allow users to easily author, publish, organize and search for information.

The Microsoft office specialist certification includes three Microsoft Certifications which are available for Sharepoint server technologies.  They include MCTS: Application development, MCTS: Configuration and Microsoft Certified application professionals (MCAP) include Microsoft office specialist training with core competencies including Office Sharepoint 2007.   After successful completion of exams, users will have displayed proficiency in each of these areas in Sharepoint 2007.   Microsoft does not have official Microsoft curriculum available and interested individuals will need to continue to search for Microsoft sharepoint training or develop the required skills using their own resources.

SharePoint's deep integration with Microsoft office is a great opportunity for Microsoft certification schools.   However before taking any instructor led classes it's my belief that with the hardware, software and dedication it's possible to teach yourself anything you want.   This process simply takes time and the right materials.   Being a Sharepoint newbie I've been interested in understanding the integration between sharepoint and other office system tools.  I'm keen on Access and sharepoint integration.  A real understanding of both products would require a Microsoft access course which stresses integration into the sharepoint system.  Once you've created access files you can drag them to a Windows sharepoint services site.  Here you can audit revision history, recover deleted data, set access permissions and schedule backups.
