Your computer is made up of a number of components and one of the most important for enjoying rich multi-media on your computer are the computer speakers you use.

This is especially important for those who love to listen to music when they are working or to watch movies in their free time. The type of speakers you choose make a huge difference. I thought it would be good to have a look at a few basic considerations when choosing a set of computer speakers.

Probably the first consideration you will face is the number of satellite speakers and subwoofers you will get. These different configurations are represented by numbers such as 2.0, 2.1 or 5.1. While the first number indicates the number of satellite speakers you will get, the second refers to the number of sub woofers that come with the set. The 2.0 is the most basic of speakers. These come with only two speakers and no subwoofers. They can be plugged directly into your computer and can give great sound but will not have the level of bass that can be expected from a system with a subwoofer. These sorts of speakers typically take the least space as well.

The next kind is the 2.1 speaker set and these are amongst the most popular types for most people. These are similar to the 2.0 above but include an additional subwoofer. The setup is still relatively compact but will add a nice dimension of bass to the sound.

Another popular version is the 5.1 speaker set up with the 5 surround sound satellites and a subwoofer. These speakers can give great surround sound and are especially good for those who love to watch movies and for gamers.

Wireless speakers have also made an entry into the computer speaker market. The primary advantage is that it saves you the hassle of multiple wires. Their other main advantage is that they are extremely portable and can be taken to any part of the home. Once they are configured to your set up, they will transmit music no matter where they are installed. They are durable and you can get weather-resistant outdoor wireless speakers as well.

One drawback is some enthusiasts say that by removing the hassel of wires, you do sacrifice some degree of sound quality. Additionally, it is sometimes possible for certain configurations of electronic devices to provide some interference on some frequencies.

I hope this has given an idea of some of the first considerations when looking to buy a set of computer speakers.
