Most people who try to learn Spanish do it with the intention of speaking it. Learning Spanish is very simple yet time consuming. If you look in the internet you will find companies promising to make you fluent within weeks if not days.

Most of these companies are only interested in making money and in doing so spread misinformation about learning Spanish or any other foreign language. Their typical scapegoat is Spanish courses taught in high school. Failure of one system does not automatically means success of another one.

Lets see what happens when one speaks a foreign language. First of all you have to have something to say in the target language. You then try to recall the correct structure and the right set of words to put into it. This should happen before you can say anything in the target language.

As we all know that one can not recall what one has not retained. So retention is the key. Retention again depends on repeated input. If you are a beginner nothing is better than extensive reading. Private Language schools do not promote reading because they will not make any money out of it.

There is a wealth of Spanish literature available in form of books and on internet. You can start reading very simple books written in Spanish (Leer en Espanol) with the help of a basic Grammar book and a small dictionary. I teach basic and intermediate Spanish at the Language Institute of Georgia in Atlanta. Reading is the first skill that students acquire because it easier to build vocabulary via reading.

You can not have a poor vocabulary and be fluent at the same time.

Ahsan Rashid is Spanish Instructor at Language Institute of Georgia. and author of ebook 'Master Spanish on your Own'.
