Before you can speak Spanish to express yourself, you need to have a vocabulary of 1500 words. You need to know the meaning of each word as well as how to use it in its proper context. Many words in Spanish have multiple meanings. You should also be able to differentiate between different meanings by context of the same Spanish word. When you are speaking you have to recall the correct set of words and structure to say what you want to say.

Recalling means very good retention which again depends on your interaction with the language. If you do not know the language vocabulary of less than 1500 words or poor understanding of the structure of the language, this interaction can be very hard to take place. Acquiring a good understanding of the Spanish language can easily take between one to two years if you spend few hours a week.
