Binge drinking is a major problem faced by most of the societies worldwide. The results of binge drinking is often traumatic for the immediate family and involves a very high cost for the society as a whole. We often read news and news channels are full of fatal accidents by young people as a result of a binge party

Developing a community strategies for preventing binge drinking among school and college students often fails to make any impression primarily due to the approach to such projects. Most such community strategies develop a plan to change binge drinking and reduce the risks associated with the misuse of alcohols and drugs at student celebrations and social events.

Most such projects approach binge drinking from the medical angle. The focus of such medical angle is on the long term effects of drugs and alcohol. But the young school or college children are brimming with energy and are able to overcome the after effects very quickly. They are unable to see beyond the next day or week and unable to relate to the long term effects.

Here are some different approaches to the problem especially with the youth.

Do not frown upon the attraction to alcohol right from childhood. If your child wants a drink on the dining table give it a watered down version. Do not make it a forbidden object. What is forbidden is always more attractive.

Do not be seen as a regular imbiber at home. If you desperately reach for your drink as soon as you get home or for all ills that face you, you are sending the wrong message to your children.

Get the children to be more active in physical activities and sports.

Alcohol is seen as an integral part of the modern lifestyle. Stop using alcohol at every celebration, social occasion or party to dilute its importance.

The society should frown upon and make it shameful to be seen drunk in public. Such people should be shunned publicly so that it is seen highly shameful.
