The more we understand what technology is teaching us about the body, the more it becomes apparent that food is a drug, because all the evidence points in that direction. Here is how to approach the thought that "food is a drug." First let's consider what a "drug delivery system" means. All drugs have an efficacious zone in which they most thrive in the body. That way, they don't kill you, (side effects) and the disease you are taking them for doesn't kill you either. The idea is that the drug enters slowly, is potent enough to stay a long time, and exits easily out of the body. Food operates precisely the same way.
Food acts like a drug in your body, because it is. Ideally, a drug first enters your body easily and undisturbingly. It is potent, effective, a little bit goes a long way, it stays in your system a long time... and when it leaves, it leaves quietly. No problems coming or going, getting in your system or leaving your system.
As there are especially potent drugs prescribed by doctors, there are especially potent foods. Among them, especially considering its mass availability, is carbs: Carbohydrates, sugar essentially. This has incredible impact over how you feel, what your energy level is, and your general mood and disposition.
When drugs are taken in this way they are the most effective. Food is no different. It functions exactly the same. We must understand that the refrigerator and pantry are every bit the medicine cabinet that our medicine cabinets are in our homes. Most people are quite conscious of properly following the assigned dosage of any prescription drugs they take. But because they don't understand that food is a drug, they are typically quite cavalier about it. Often an "anything goes" approach is adapted. That has to change.
Now that we've established that food is a drug, let's look at how we can optimize our bio-chemistry; successfully self-manage the chemical factory inside each of us. Our immune systems are largely functional based on the condition and capacity of our biochemistry. It is at the chemical level that the body first fights off many diseases. In addition, the idea that our energy is inconsistent or that our mental acuity comes and goes is also a direct effect of our biochemistry.
There are basically three foods. Everything you eat, once you swallow it, is a protein, a carbohydrate, or a fat. Yes, there is also vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water to consider, but that is what's in the food versus what the food is.
Proteins, carbohydrates, and fats; each interact differently and have different purposes within the body. The other factor is the rate of ingestion. Ideally it's putting a relative amount of protein, carbs, and fats, in your body at regular intervals. This is the first rule of thumb. When we get into what foods are proteins and what foods are carbohydrates, etc., it will become apparent how easy it is to combine foods of these types together in a way that's fast, simple, and gets the job done. For right now, just get your arms around the idea of that when you eat, the food has these three elements; the proteins the carbs, the fats.
