Most adults have experienced insomnia or sleeplessness at one time or another in their lives. An estimated 30%-50% of the general populations are affected by insomnia, and 10% have chronic insomnia.

Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease. By definition, insomnia is "difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, or both" or the perception of poor quality sleep. Insomnia may therefore be due to inadequate quality or quantity of sleep.

Insomnia is very common and occurs in 30% to 50% of the general population. Approximately 10% of the population may suffer from chronic (long-standing) insomnia.

Insomnia is such a common condition, affecting millions of Americans, yet many people are not aware of the serious consequences of Insomnia.

Commonly referred to as sleeplessness, or lack of sleep, insomnia can lead to severe fatigue, anxiety, depression and lack of concentration. Insomnia is serious, although unlike other diseases it does not kill. But only a sleep deprived person knows how lonely and how terrible this state can be.

Sleeplessness, or Insomnia, is something of an epidemic in the US right now. The National Sleep Foundation says that 47 million American adults may be at risk of injury and physical and emotional difficulty because they do not get enough sleep.

Recently, the National Institutes of Health estimated that 50 million to 70 million Americans of all ages suffer sleep-related problems.

Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or waking in the middle of the night and staying awake, if this problem continues for more then a month is called chronic insomnia.

Most of the cases of insomnia are related to normal day to day worries and tension or simply to caffeine consumption and is not a serious condition but it can be very frustrating, and can cause lack of attention and bad temper.

Home Remedy for Insomnia

1. An effective way to treat insomnia would be to have milk form the poppy seeds. Extract 30 grams of milk from poppy seeds and add some sugar to it. Have this mixture everyday after dinner.

2. Grind four nutmegs to make a fine powder out of it. Have this powder every night before going to sleep.

3. Insomnia can be treated following the same routine i.e. try to sleep at a fixed time every night and wake up at a fixed time in the morning. This would set a sleeping schedule.

4. Hot fomentations help to solve the problem of insomnia. Apply hot packs to the spine and have hot footbath before going to bed.

5. Intake a cup of milk with honey. This is effective in curing insomnia.

6. Grind the root of pippali (Piper longum) plant to make a fine powder. Every night, have 1 tsp of this powder along with jaggery and a glass of warm milk.

7. Take a ripe banana and mash it. Add roasted cumin seeds to it and mix properly. Consume this mashed mix before going to sleep.

8. Extract fresh juice of valerian wallichi. Intake 1 tsp of this every night before going to sleep.

9. Do regular exercise or partake in some physical activities everyday. This would /solve the problem of insomnia. Walking, jogging, skipping and swimming are the good exercises for treating insomnia.
