Global warming first appeared in a New York Times report in 1929 and has been debated on and off ever since. While global warming might seem like an unstoppable freight train chugging down the tracks, there are small changes you can make to ensure you are not adding fuel to the fire. Changes including: buying ENERGY STAR bulbs, insulating your home, quitting smoking or switching to electronic cigarettes, and reducing, reusing and recycling.
In recent years, the press picked up on the phenomenon and pushed the debate into every high school, learning establishment and home across America and beyond. The debate has been flaming in political spheres much longer than that though.
In 2006, then-Senator now-President Obama stated, "The issue of climate change [, or global warming,] is one that we ignore at our own peril." While President Obama debated the effects of climate change long before stepping into the Oval office, the debate and effects of global warming has only increased with time. Below are some small changes you can make to help positively impact a flaming global warming debate.
Buying ENERGY STAR Bulbs & Insulate
Even something as small as changing five light bulbs can significantly impact the environment in a positive way. Light bulbs and light fixtures with ENERGY STAR bulbs reduce the amount of energy needed to product light, in turn reducing emissions and saving money on energy bills. According to the EPA, if every household replaced their top five most used light bulbs in their home with ENERGY STAR bulbs, it would prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the emissions of nearly 10 million cars.
Quitting Smoking or Switching to Electronic Cigarettes
Sure quitting smoking is beneficial for your health the health of those around you, but did you know that it is beneficial to the environment? Tobacco cigarettes emit over 4,000 chemicals and toxins and pollute the environment in terms of smoke and litter.
Even the most conservative smoker cannot contain the pollution caused by cigarettes, because while cigarette butts can be disposed of properly, cigarette smoke cannot be contained. Another alternative to quitting smoking is to switch to electronic cigarettes. E cigarettes transmit a nicotine vapor that is inhaled by the user and resembles the look and feel of a real cigarette-without the negative effects of tobacco or tobacco smoke.
Reduce, Reuse & Recycle
Ah, the age-old trend of reducing, reusing and recycling. With the help of organizations like Craigslist, Freecycle and thrift store, reusing or recycling items and unwanted clothing or products has never been easier. Recycling paper, plastic and metal goods is a practice that most cities and towns participate in. By reducing your usage, reusing items and recycling items you no longer want, you are shrinking the environmental footprint you and your family leave on the environment.
By making small changes to your daily life and way of thinking, you can help to save the environment and reduce the impact of you and your family on the environment and hopefully slow down the global warming freight train. Make changes in your life today including buying ENERGY STAR bulbs and insulating your home, quitting smoking or switching to electronic cigarettes, and reducing, reusing and recycling. Make small changed today and help the future of our planet and future generations.
