Pesticides should never be used to control weeds in any garden. The synthetic chemicals are deadly to our natural environment. The very use of these dangerous compounds raises many concerns; public safety, environmental and economic issues. Garden centers carry dozens of herbicides which can be used with deadly efficiency to kill weeds, roots and all. They're easy to use, and while some are costly, they spare the gardener a great deal of labor. The question is, should they be used?

The answer isn't as simple as a quick "yes" or "no." It's important to consider how such chemicals are used and for what purpose. In general, it's best to avoid toxic garden chemicals and rely on environmentally-friendly methods of weed and pest control. Increasingly, there seems to be growing evidence and scientific research which indicates these petroleum based compounds are risky. Some of the research would indicate pregnancy problems, learning disorders, and some forms of cancer are linked to exposure to these deadly compounds.

So what to do if you want to stay organic and try to help the native population? Should they find their way into your home then the gloves must come off so that you are able to protect your home and food. The new ants are voracious, in such large numbers per colony that they have reportedly eaten their way through the sugary contents of a cupboard in just one night.

Would you want your children or grand-children to play where those chemicals are? I am by no means a naturalist and I am sure I sound like one. But I personally think if people were more cautious about the things they use day to day, that we could rid the world of a lot of toxins that are out there. I do not recycle like I should or would like to. But since my personal experience I am more aware of the chemicals in my household and what the effects of them are.I just think before you spray anything or spread any powder down to control weeds. Read the back of it and look at all the warnings.

A natural approach to pest control is possible! But if you do find you still have to spray something, there are lots of natural ingredients you can use. These include lemon juice and lavender for getting rid of ants. It is not harmful to you and your family, but the ants do not like.
