First time moms have tons of questions and concerns like how to I feed the baby? Am I feeding he/she enough? How do I get them to sleep through the night? And so forth.

One major question to ask yourself is how do I keep my baby safe in the nursery. The nursery is supposed to be a babies happy and safe place but it can be dangerous if parents are not careful. Things to consider and remember:

* To help reduce the risk of SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, have your baby sleep on its back rather than its tummy.

* Never let a baby sleep on a soft surface like a couch, chair or regular bed. They need a firm surface to help stop suffocation. The safest place is in their crib with a firm mattress and well-fitted crib sheet.

* Make sure that your crib matches all safety standards meaning all corner posts should be 1-16 inch of shorter and they should be the same height as the end panels. The distance between the slats should be 2 and 3/8 inches or less.

* Make sure you install and assemble everything according to the directions. Always check to make sure that everything is tight and sturdy and nothing is sticking out like nails or screws.

* Keep pillows, stuffed animals, bumpers and blankets out of the crib while your baby is resting due to suffocation risks.

* Bumper pads are great for decoration but babies can suffocate up against them. If you use them make sure that the ties are short so your baby can not get tangled in them.

* Keep your baby's crib away from windows because of drafts.

* Use a baby monitor to view and hear your child while they sleep.

* Get down on your hands and knees as if you were a baby crawling and look and see if you see anything that would pose a danger to them.

These things will help keep your baby safe and secure in the nursery.
