There are several uses throughout industry for the types of machining processes that have grown throughout the centuries. Some of the most widely used machining produces include taps and dies for creating holes in a metal work piece. Though there are countless types of taps and countless type of dies, it may be effective to briefly distinguish among them for the purpose of understanding precisely what kind of machining tool is used in each kind of process.

A tap is simple machining product that is used to make a hole in a work piece and is very similar to a drill, though the process typically involves more of a special type of precision that traditional drills are simply not capable of. There are several different types of taps that bore precision holes through metal or other very tough type of working material. The different types of taps are used for specific applications, and can be often interchanged.

Some of the most precise types of taps are called blueprint special taps. These taps are ordered directly from a manufacturer and are created with specific dimension for a specific project. Many companies that machine these taps are able to custom build them within a few days and are able to fit the exact dimensions of a given project. This enables the project to be conducted without constantly switching taps or changing the equipment.

There are also many new types of taps that can have improved the performance and quality of the project. These newly developed taps are known as Tru-Flo thread forming taps and improve the strength of the tap due to the design feature. The thread forming taps are constructed with a fluteless design that adds to the strength in the machined product by producing a hole is formed rather than cut. This eliminates the process of chip removal and clean-up. The chip clean-up process is typically one of the more time consuming and difficult procedures that take place within the machining plant. The die is also readily adaptable to lubrication to further increase performance and durability.

There are also specially sized and shaped taps that can machine parts that usual taps are simply not able to do. There are trapezoidal taps available that can offer the modified shapes and machine specialty process. Similarly, there are also many metrics sized taps available that can create a precision metric threading for any type of international or other kinds of engineered product.

A threading die is a machining component that is required for the tap process. They help to guide and place the tap in a way that is simply not possible without a high-quality threading die. Taps and dies create the groundwork for later machining.
