It does not matter if you have been employed all your life or self employed you still need an income when you retire. If you have been employed by your government you will probably have an income related to your final salary. Although these type of schemes are going to be phased out eventually.

The self employed will have had to fund their own retirement. Most who have been running companies will hope they can sell their shares in the business at an appropriate time to fund their retirement or have sufficient funds in a pension plan to give them an income in retirement.

A great number of people do not end up with the income they had planned and others do not plan an income for their retirement. There are many reasons a retirement income falls short of expectations. A business may not be as its best when the owner wants to retire so may have to sell for a lower amount.

Pension planning is at the mercy of the financial markets. You would need to be a financial planner to understand the correct time to invest for your retirement. Sometimes it is your luck not your judgement that helps with your pension fund. This does not help when you approach your retirement and realise the monthly income you were expecting is far short of your plans.

What do you do to cover the short fall? For most is means reducing your expectations and living on less income. The alternative is to earn the short fall in income. Which means either going back to work, full time or part time, or start up another business.

There is another way to earn additional income without having to go back to work full or part time of having to set up a new business. It is not a get rich quick scheme or boring work stuffing envelopes or similar, or multi level marketing, etc. It can be done from home or when you are on holiday. There is no initial outlay and very little to learn to start. You will only need a computer and know how to type.

Most people have heard of Google which is the top search engine on the Internet and is extremely cash rich with billions in the bank. For those who don't know how Google earns their money you may not be surprised that their main income comes from advertising revenue.

In 2000 Google introduced Adwords for advertiser and Adsense for publishers. Adwords and Adsense are one and the same thing. When you search for information or businesses on Google you are presented with two lists. The main center list is an organic list and the list on the right of a search result is an Adwords list paid for by advertisers who want to reach a specific audience.

Google makes money when people click on these Adwords to visit the website linked to it. All the income from these adverts is kept by Google. But Google realised that there was another place where they could place Adwords to earn more income and that place was on other peoples websites.

Google called this type of advertising Adsense and offered website owners a share of their advertising revenue by installing advertisements on websites. The share of the revenue is 60% to the website owner and 40% to Google. Income is generated when someone visits a website and clicks on an Adsense advertisement. Although each click only generates pennies per click it increases dramatically when a website starts getting lots of visitors.

Anyone who has reached retirement has a whole lifetime of experiences, stories to tell, hobbies they are experts in, business knowledge to write about and the list goes on. The Internet is full of information and is successful because people are constantly looking for information. That information gets there because website owners write the information.

There is a whole army of writers around the world who get paid to write articles for other peoples websites and there are article writers who make money from Google because they either put their articles on websites then share the Adsense advertisements revenue with the website owners who receive high traffic volume. Or they set up their own website about a particular subject and place Adsense advertisements on their own website to earn an income.

Google shares a substantial part of its income this way and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Why not write about what you know and earn from it?

My name is Alan Bunyan and I have been self employed since 1980 working and running my own businesses. I wanted to work for myself and my first venture was buying a village stores and becoming a grocer. After two years and making little money I set up the first video library in my town in 1980, but many of my friends said I was mad. I sold the business after three years for a large sum and by then had purchased the freehold of the property the video library was located in.

When my wife and daughter decided to set up Edible Bouquets in 2007. I decided also to help with marketing EdibleBouquets and the Internet was where I believed I could help built awareness for their business. I have been self learning for some years about building websites and how to gain visibility on the Internet.

It has taken me three years so far to get a few websites, especially Edible Bouquets, ranked highly and start getting traffic to the website. Now most new customers come from the website with the remainder from referrals and repeat business. I have set up a second website for the business which offers fresh fruit Wedding Table Decorations.

I write articles for my other websites and now earn a small income from Google Adsense. I want others to know how I achieved it and how they can do the same. I have a new website called Starting a Business where I am writing about my experiences and Internet marketing knowledge.
