Top 4 reasons why you should hire a reliable web designing firm and not a college kid...

Quality: The professionals know what you want. They have been doing it for living, they know in and out of it. They can make suggestions and help you get the latest and greatest. They are up-to-date with design and technology trends so your 2009 website will look like a 2009 website and not a rubber stamped one from 1999...

Experience: Your job gets done right, the first time and you do not end up running after a college kid only to find either he's sick or out of town, or busy preparing for Final Tests (I've heard some weird ones too) and can't help... Most web designing firms have a team of graphic designers, usability experts, developers/programmers and project managers. Your project manager is your point of contact and he is responsible for getting your work done to your satisfaction.

Cost: Initially, it may seem costlier to hire a web designing firm, but considering the time and headaches you save, it's undoubtedly worth it. Remember, you get what you pay for. Beer and pizza would only get you a website worth that much... Your website is your face, your shop, your business, online. Get a good one because your customers are surfing and making a decision. Believe it or not, most of us still judge the book by its cover; why not get a good one?

Support: You don't want to run after a college kid for future support. What if you want to change an image or some text on your website, or add new items and functionalities, or need help and support for any reason? What if something needs to be done on an urgent basis, you can't tell your customer "I can't get hold of the college kid, who did this". Only a good designer and developer can give you all this and the best part they would simply be a call or email away.

With all this being said, my suggestion would be to do your due diligence, do some research, talk to multiple designers and all size of firms, ask for sample work and customer references. Make a matrix to weigh your options, in terms of money and what you're getting for it... and then only decide who you should hire to build your "business face" online...
