Over the last two decades of the 20th century, rapid deforestation has taken its tool. Indonesia as a country that has huge forests, also suffer from bad deforestation. Data shows, in last 50 years, forest area has decreased from 162 million hectares to 98 millions hectares in 1996. This is also become intractable problem for the societies that have to face illegal logging practice, forest fire and the scale of corruption in forest industry when they wish to protect the forest for livelihood.

Community is a stakeholder that has the closest connection and relation to forest. They can harvest and exploit it easily. However, when they do over exploitation, community will suffer from natural hazard such drought and flood. That is why they need to utilize the forest wisely.

Malalo village in West Sumatra Province has local wisdom to protect their forest with give obligation to the villagers to plant trees in forest before marriage, two trees for a couple. This tradition has been done since their ancestor and they are trying to regulating it in a white paper. They wish they could protect their forest from deforestation and for sustainability.

Balikpapan city located in East Kalimantan has issued a new regulation for a couple to get recommendation letter to get marry. The East Kalimantan government obliges them to submit one to tree seedling then a couple can get the letter. This regulation aims to promote community awareness to protect the forest. The government wishes it will be a habit in the future and will reduce deforestation.

There must be any other local wisdom from the community in entire world in order to protect the forest and the world can take it as the basic of a new regulation in order to protect our forest. Protecting forest is become world's obligation and our obligation. Each of us can do war to global warming.

How about Planting a Tree INSTEAD of Marriage. After two divorces, I'd wager that trees are a far safer alternative.

Not that I'm *bitter* or anything, you understand... ;)

Good luck and many thanks.

The world has to do something to stop global warming. One thing would help the seperation of water for fuel. We have a way to do that but the idiots we elect are too interested in lining their own pockets.

Water is nothing but Oxygen and Hydrogen. This seperation can be done by low frequency raidio waves, but the oil rich companies do not care what they are doing to the human race.

I think it is a nice tradition, but a shame that they are trying to enforce it now by more formal means. It would be a thoughtful custom for individual couples to adopt, but in broader society, who exactly would be the "villagers" responsible for planting the trees? I have a feeling this would, once again, put much of the burden on those who can least afford it, rather than on those responsible for the deforestation.

In the City of Cordoba (Argentina) we have a "Life Park" (Parque de la Vida). It was created in the nineties by a former mayor so that families could plant a tree for each child which was born in the city.
It worked well at the start. However, when this mayor left office, the city underspent in park security, and people were attacked and robbed at the park. So, it became a dangerous place and nobody plants trees anymore when children are born. It´s sad, because it was a good idea and people liked the place.
Maybe it can be done somewhere else.
Regards,
Maria Laura

Not a bad idea. Perhaps one should plant one for every year of marriage.

BTW: when my dad was buried it was in a greenfield cemetery and they planted a tree above his grave.

How about, plant a tree for every human on the planet and everytime a new person is born...

Walter's answer is spot on. Water can be turned into hydrogen very easily and cheaply, but until the oil companies and the auto industry do something about this, we are caught in a stranglehold, a sort of monopoly mentality of "our way or the highway" by these people... Greed does that...

Wow what a wonderful tradition. I think it would be beneficial to everyone to adopt this tradition, or even to plant a tree after the birth of a child.

Good idea, How about having a tree registry for the guests to pledge to plant a tree at a given location in the name of the couple.

There are other similar golden rules being exercised. In South Korea, it has been a major effort to have one (perhaps, even two) arbor days a year. This has played a major role in their reforestation from the Post WWII and Korean War situation when the land was deforested by Japanese occupation. There is a stark contrast when one looks North from the DMZ and South, today. Looking North, not much change. South, it is lush green farmland with trees and development.

I think that planting trees is ALWAYS a good idea, not only before marriage and not only in West Sumatra.

This is a well established tradition in Israel. It can be done to mark any special occasion. Plus, you don't have to plant your own tree.

Checking further there are several organizations here in the U.S. which have similar projects. See links below.

I think we should work with state legislatures to make this a law. When you get a marriage license, $1 is added to the cost to plant a tree. What an incredible idea!

Here's a twist that some do. Buy a living tree (with a root ball) at Christmas, and plant it after the holiday. :)

Trees: nature's air conditioners, purifiers and filtration system. Plus, they're pretty!

Ordinarily I wouldn't be in agreement with "regulating", or making a law, but as a tree hugger from birth, and as someone who likes to breathe, I think this is a marvelous idea !
From a spiritual and subtle energy perspective, the act of funding the future of our planet's ecosystems bodes superbly well for any such couple, their marriage and their prosperity!
Tree planting is a many millenia, longstanding Jewish tradition also ( in other cultures too, I'm sure ).
Planting a tree at the birth of a child, and any other momentous occasion--even at the launch of a new business....look for Any and Every opportunity....

Very interesting. On a related note, I recently saw a documentary called Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai, that discusses the social impact deforestation had in Kenya. The film revolves around Wangari Maathai and the grassroots movement she created among women to help combat it. A fascinating and powerful story. http://takingrootfilm.com/about.htm

I for one, think this is a great idea.

Posted By: Josh Chernin Date: November 29, 2008

I think it is a nice custom, for those who choose to observe it, but I question the wisdom of legislating this...it's the thought that counts.

Trees are our protection and filters for the environment. If any child is born, we should plant a tree also. This will be very remarkable step and addition in EARTH. When the child is born, the food is already created by the creator. As a token of newly born child’s birthday happiness or kids first birthday, if we plant a tree as a very small gift to the nature that will be VERY REWARDING TO THE FUTURE GENERATIONS/NATURE.

I read yesterday that 1 on 3 marriages end up in divorce. Does this mean that the trees you planted will be chopped down?

Realistically, I don't think we can force people to do it. You could get far though, when you attach a 'lifestyle' to it. Green, hip, bling-bling. If some superstar is doing it, everybody wants to do it. Is Al Gore married?

For me: i won't do it, for i won't get married. (i don't like the institution). However, my boyfriend has created a (sub)tropical jungle in my small appartment, and a small forest on the balcony.

It's a fun idea, but i don't think it will work.
