An Independence Day Like No Other

Independence Day is a day that brings out the patriotism out of people.  Yet, this independence day, we can truly feel independent in terms of how far America has came.  For the first time in history, we have an African American running for President who has a great chance of winning the presidency.  We also have the oldest American running for President.  This Fourth of July is like many others in terms of celebrations, but this Fourth of July is different from others.

Why? Why is this Independence Day different?  To achieve independence for the United States was no easy thing.  It took years and years to come up with a document which would later become the constitution.  It involved thinkers and innovators.  Those that had radical ideas of their time, and those that did not have radical ideas.  Yet, they were united for a common cause: A United States of America.  One thing that was missing then was equality.  Equality was the value that could have made America stronger then, if it was implemented.

We learned our lessons through other's sacrifices on what's right and what's wrong.  The biggest obstacle being overcoming bigotry.  We have to remember the slaves who worked equally as hard in their way to achieve independence.  Although many were not often included in decision making policies, they have an equal role in the foundations of America.  Senator Barack Obama, although not directly a descendant of these slaves, has a vested interest in them.  For one thing, his daughters are descendants.  If he lived at that time, no matter how smart he was, someone of his skin color would be a slave.  This is the sad history that we must also be reminded of, because it plays an important role in the development of America and the movements it would cause, such as the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movements.

What is great about America that makes America different from other nations, it acknowledges the bitter past and wants to progress to a better and more equal future.  America wants to be the beacon of hope and the beacon of light for all humans, regardless of their color, creed, or religion.  We should be proud of our nation that we have a candidate like Barack Obama running for President.  Not just because of Obama's color, ethnicity, or even his name, but what he stands for and what he symbolizes.  Even the Republicans should be proud of Senator Barack Obama.  He brings people together and you can see it in his rallies.

Senator Obama has a lot to be proud of, but we all have a lot to be proud of when we have someone with a name like Barack Obama, who was only a State Senator, four years ago, has achieved so much that some past leaders have failed to do, bringing people together.  When people are together, they are more united.  When people are more united, their society is stronger.  Presidential nominee Barack Obama makes us proud of ourselves and what we have achieved.  This independence day is even more special.  Happy Independence Day!
