The recent cover of the New Yorker covering the Democratic Presidential Nominee Barack Obama and his wife, the Honorable Dr. Michelle Obama, as Middle Easterners is unaccurate and not the truth.  Magazines should provide opportunities of hope and inspire people.  Selling the magazine through the image should not have to come at this price.

How far should one go to sell a product?  The problem with some corporations is the fact that they will go very far to achieve the most profit out of product.  Someone within the New Yorker thought that this would be a great image to portray an opinion and sell well at the same time.  What were the New Yorkers thinking?  Would they have done the same thing with Senator John McCain?   Although John McCain, appearing with George Bush is probably close to the New Yorker's image but it only scares the conservatives even more.

There is a segment in the population that fears the Middle East.  We will never win hearts and minds in the Middle East when we fear the Middle East.  Fears create even more enemies, hopes makes us friends.  There is a set of population that thinks minorities as second class citizens.  Most people who will see the cover of a magazine, make judgements based on the appearance in the magazine.  They will not read the article but look for the cover as cover portrays the story beneath.  Yet, it will not necessarily be the story that they remember, but the image.  New Yorker used poor judgement in regards to Senator Obama and the Honorable Michelle Obama in to portraying them in fearful eyes.

New Yorker gave Fox News some product to work with.  Some analysts of Fox News were practically trying to create an image of Senator Barack Obama that New Yorker represents.  It is sad that sensational issues sells papers and gain advertisements, but they should not have to do it on false information.  Senator Obama is not a Muslim nor is he an Arab.  Senator Obama's fist bumping is a way of affection and connection with his wife in an image that husbands and wives are a team, not just individuals.  New Yorker must understand that most of the people who will see the page will get a false image of Senator Obama.  The reality is that not everyone that sees it is as open minded or even as tolerant as we sometimes believe.  There are those in our circles who fear minorities since they never have come across minorities.  This fear creates and strengthens the concepts of segregation which we must fight against through the art of ink and interaction.

New Yorker should not only apologize to the people, but have a positive image of Senator Barack Obama as part of the American Dream.  They should have him raising the American flag, hand in hand with his wife and family behind a cheering crowd of diverse people.  Senator Obama represents everyone.  He is not anyone from the outside.  He is the beauty of America.  He needs our love, affection and support.  He is a symbol among us and shows us that every American truly has an opportunity with hard work.  He is the image to show to the world that you do not have to be of a certain race or a certain religion to become President.  There will be a time when there will be the first woman President, the first Jewish American President.  In Father Abraham Lincoln's America, anything that innovates humanity is possible in America.
