Who should be the Next Vice President of the United States in 2008?
In choosing a Vice President, the Presidential nominee should choose the person whom he can best work with, and who will add more value to the office of the Presidency. But the Vice President should not overshadow the President or steal the show. The Vice President must play behind the scenes role. But most importantly, the Vice President must get along with the President. It is their friendship or working relationship that will determine the success of their administration.
For Democratic Presidential Nominee Senator Barack Obama, he must pick a Vice President who he believes can bring more people from the Red States in to his own view points. Many have said that it should be someone who has experience in dealing with matters of national security. Senator Barack Obama has to have someone who has the wisdom of world affairs. Senator Barack Obama has to pick someone who has a more conservative or moderate approach to ideas. The Vice President will have to be the behind the scenes father figure for Senator Barack Obama. That person must also appeal to people in the most reddish states.
Georgia is among the most reddish states. It's where the Libertarian Candidate, Bob Barr calls home. It was the home of former President Jimmy Carter, former Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and a former Cable giant, Ted Turner. It is in the heartland of the Red States such as Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama. Georgia is part of a greater demographic of the South. The Southern States which sometimes feel that they are left behind when the focus is often on the big states. Although there are no ideal candidates that can blend the all in one, we can find some of the values in Sam Nunn
To begin with, Sam Nunn already has a major institution named after him, the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the prestigious institution of Georgia Tech. He has Senatorial experience from the past and is often respected by his conservative colleagues. He would definitely help Senator Barack Obama compete in Georgia. He is also old enough to be a father figure to Senator Barack Obama at the age of 70. President Jimmy Carter recommended Sam Nunn as Senator Barack Obama's Vice President because he would be the in office mentor that Senator Barack Obama needs while in office.
Sam Nunn also served in the U.S. Coast Guard, served in the House of Representatives, and served as a Senator. Most importantly, in a world of Nuclear Threats, Sam Nunn understands the world where nuclear technology is becoming more of a threat, with North Korea and Iran. Yet, he also favors diplomacy in dealing with countries like Iran. He may be moderate or he may be conservative, but he is the type of leader that can provide comfort to those that may have questions regarding Senator Barack Obama's ability to deal with major issues in a nuclear world. Sam Nunn also brings forward the importance of Southern States in the map, to show, we are not going to take you for granted, unlike George Bush during Hurricane Katrina. Sam Nunn will help Senator Barack Obama compete in a Red State like Georgia.
Senator Barack Obama will have to win the heart and minds of the conservatives to have a successful presidency, and that includes winning the heart and minds of people like Sam Nunn. One thing that Sam Nunn can say and that the Republican Vice Presidential nominee may have a difficult time to counter, is the fact that he has a major institution of International Affairs at a major university named after him. At a time when International Relations is the key to the strength of America globally, Sam Nunn is the best pick out of the media influenced candidates for Vice President. He will do behind the scenes work, but in a respectable manner and with calculated experience without stealing the star power, in other words, Sam Nunn is no Dick Cheney.
