Iraq Justice Ministry: Prisoners escape is an organized scheme
Iraq’s Justice Ministry affirmed on Friday that prisoners’ escape is an organized scheme as some prisons’ administrations are acting in collusion with low people. There are some leaders and parties who are supporting prisoners, the ministry said. The Justice Ministry will head a commission to probe into the number of missing prisoners since 2009 till present. “The Justice Ministry is the lodging party. It is only responsible for respecting human rights and providing prisoners with an appropriate nutrition”, head of the media office at the Justice Minister Haidar Al Saadi told Alsumarianews. “The Ministry will take reform measures similar to Taji prison by changing the administrations of some prisons on account of their shortcoming”, Al Saadi said. “Most detainees are not escaping by themselves. They are being helped to flee due to the collusion between prisons administrations and low people. That’s how detainees are managing to escape”, he noted. Justice Minister Hassan Al Shumari has sent an investigation committee to Taji prison in order to probe the incident. There are reports that confirm major violations in prisons and point out to the influence of ethnic groups on the prison’s administration that have led prison officials to yield to detainees’ schemes and the parties supporting them, Al Shumari said. “The Justice Ministry is dealing with a heavy burden since new minister Hassan Al Shumari took office”, Al Saadi said. The Ministry has to deal with militias, Qaeda and parties supporting detainees inside the prison, he added. Head of the media office at the Justice Ministry noted in regards to the number of missing prisoners that the Ministry will head a commission to probe into the number of missing prisoners since 2009 till present. An Iraqi informed security source had revealed on Friday that five chiefs of the Mehdi Army managed to escape from Taji prison, northern Baghdad. Three detainees were reported missing while transferring them to Karkh central prison, the Justice Ministry said. Iraq’s Justice Ministry ended the missions of Taji prison’s administration on account of the escape of five chiefs of the Mehdi Army. The Ministry confirmed that the escape was facilitated due to collusion with the prison’s administration. The Chief of the League of the Righteous Group (Asaib Ahl Al Haq) Adnan Taj Shalal Sharhan escaped from Taji prison in January. Sharhan managed to escape due to the help of some of the guards, a security source said.
