"Let him who means to love life and see good days refrain his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile. "And let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. "For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, And His ears attend to their prayer, But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." (1 Peter 3:10-13).

The average person does not recognize the value of good speech. Those who speak well, without anger, complimentary, smiling and with grace bring blessings and happiness to those they interact with. In business, you hear a lot these days about good customer service. Why is this important? Because we want to do business with people who are nice, who smile and show appreciation for the money we spend in their establishment and do all they can to help make the customer's experience a good one.

Good speech will always bless others. It will always accomplish more than threats, speaking with guile and curses. It should be the foundation of good conversation and wholesome meetings. God teaches us through today's Proverb that good speech will also bring benefits to those who practice it. In fact, the practice of good speech will add to your years, bring happiness to your life and reduce tension.

"Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned, as it were, with salt, so that you may know how you should respond to each person." (Colossians 4:5-6).

Proverbs 12 - Teaches us today?

Proverbs 12:14 "(14) "A man will be satisfied with good by the fruit of his words, And the deeds of a man's hands will return to him."

Psalm 74:5-8 (Theme: Anchors In The Storm). "(5) It seems as if one had lifted up His axe in a forest of trees. (6) And now all its carved work They smash with hatchet and hammers. (7) Thy have burned Thy sanctuary to the ground; Thy have defiled the dwelling place of Thy name. (8) They said in their heart, "Let us completely subdue them." They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land."
Today's question. Can bad speech shorten life?

Yes, there are many people who constantly speak in a negative way, who bring distress to others and who lead others astray, who live shorten lives. Some of these situations can be observed in the media when it is reported. I know it is true because I have personally observed it. By our words we are judged and it is more often than not, that our Lord provides rewards or burns them up depending upon our speech. "For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned." (Matthew 12:37).

On the other hand, just as God promised children who honor their parents a longer life (5th Commandment), so does he lengthen the days of those who bring blessings to others. A smile and gracious speech will bless both you and the one who receives it.

"Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is the man who desires life, And loves length of days that he may see good; Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil, and do good; Seek peace, and pursue it." (Psalm 34:11-14).

Exercising good speech is a choice. Control your tongue even if those about you are loosing theirs.

Dear God, thank you for this wisdom. When I go out, help me to smile. When I return, help me to bring in a smile. Amen.
