"Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves." (Romans 13:1-2).
How is it possible for a baby to come into this world completely helpless, having to have everything done for him/her, completely dependent on parents for food, clothing, security, comfort, love and yes even language to curse their father and mother? Who are the child's first teachers? Who teaches them to speak, to learn hot from cold, to learn sharp from dull, soft from hard. Who teaches them to say thank you, I'm sorry, please or even to call out to mom or dad?
God honors parents. He honors parents by providing both a mother and a father in a God given entity called a family. He honors them by directing children to honor them in the Ten Commandments. He honors them in giving them authority over their children and all things around them in the family. He blesses parents and gives them rewards. Blessings in the here and now and rewards in heaven. And even when tragedies happen, when divorce takes place, when a person becomes a single parent, God still blesses parents because He knows that they are doing all that they can for their children.
So what type of child curses his father and does not bless his mother? It is a child who has poor character. There are other characteristics of this type of child; they are usually lazy, poor students, disobedient, do not respect authority and behave in foolish ways. Not a pretty picture, because rather than bringing parents pride and joy, they bring anguish and sadness. God hates this type of behavior. In Exodus 21:17 He states: "And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death." And in Deuteronomy 27:16: "Cursed is he who dishonors his father or mother".
Proverbs 30 - Teaches us today?
Proverbs 30:11 "(11) There is a kind of man who curses his father, And does not bless his mother."
Psalm 49:5-9 (Theme: Man's Final Destiny). "(5) Why should I fear in days of adversity, When the iniquity of my foes surrounds me, (6) Even those who trust in their wealth, And boast in the abundance of their riches? (7) No man can by any means redeem his brother, Or give to God a ransom for him- (8) For the redemption of his soul is costly, And he should cease trying forever- (9)That he should live on eternally; That he should not undergo decay."
Today's question. What can we do?
Proverbs 30:11 teaches that there is a kind of person that does these things. This kind of person is not a function of genetics, who their parents are, what kind of environment they live in or how rich or poor they may be. They are a type of person.
This type of person thinks they are right and everyone else is wrong. They believe that their way of thinking is unique and pure and they have every confidence in what they think. Indeed, they do not even understand why other people cannot see it their way and they often walk away from you shaking their heads.
We love our children so much that we have a tendency to enable their behavior. But what we must do is to let them make mistakes and suffer the consequences. But in addition to this, we must also do all that we can to teach them God's word.
These kids need more than singing, ‘Jesus Loves Me'; or playing games; or having fun; they need in depth Bible study. They must first accept the authority of God and then they must be carefully taught God's word.
Dear God, I pray for all those who can provide some type of intervention for these children. I pray that they will submit themselves to your teaching. I pray that you will not turn from them but bless them and show them the same kind of love as you would for all prodigal children. Amen.
