"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him." (James 1:5).

As a young man, I could rest assured that every adult I met was interested in my getting a good education. They would always ask, without fail, how I was doing in school. I did not realize then, the importance of their question and interest in my education. This is in great contrast today when I run into students who say that his/her teachers and many others do not care about them.

I got my first glimpse of the importance of this question while working a summer job as a laborer. One day several men said to me; "you do not want to end up like us. Make sure you get your education so you will have options in life." I will never forget the sincerity of their statement and of that moment.

Another glimpse of the importance of education for me occurred when I ran into a dear friend who had dropped out of high school to raise a family, when I observed sadness in his eyes as we were talking about being accepted into college. A dream that was now beyond his reach.

Proverbs 4 deals with the love of learning. Do not forsake your education and she will guard you; Love learning and she will watch over you. Acquire your education and wisdom, make contributions to the lives of others and she will take care of you.

Proverbs 4 - Teaches us today?

Proverbs 4:5-6 "(5) Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. (6) Do not forsake her, and she will guard you; Love her, and she will watch over you."

Psalm 13:1-2 (Theme: How Much Longer Lord) "(1) How long, O Lord? Wilt Thou forget me forever? How long wilt Thou hide Thy face from me? (2) How long shall I take counsel in my soul, Having sorrow in my heart all the day? How long will my enemy be exalted over me?"
Today's question. Is wisdom available to all?

The first source of wisdom is God himself. He has given us his wisdom through the Holy Bible. Read it! The second source of wisdom is from wise men/women who generally will be older people. The challenges and problems we all have today have been overcome by others. Never think that you are the first with a particular problem; find the right teacher or a person who may have had similar problems.

Unfortunately, many people go through challenges in life alone. I find this is particularly a fault of young people. They may discuss their problems and life concerns with friends, other young people that have no more experience than they do, but out of pride or perhaps fear, they fail to discuss important issues with parents or other trustworthy adults.

Yes wisdom is available to all who seek it. The key word is ‘seek'. Wisdom is not simply poured into our heads. To gain wisdom requires effort. "And I say to you, ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you." (Luke 11:9). In this verse, seek means to do all that we can do ourselves within our own power. Knock means to be persistent.

Dear God, I pray for adults to inquire of young people as to how they are doing in school and to ask them about their future plans. Amen.
