All it takes is to take the first step and commit to following through. Start by trying something new.

Try something new.

When you try something you haven't done before or something you're not very good at, you have to accept that you may not be very good at it yet. If you've never painted before and you paint your first painting, accept that it may not sell in a gallery yet. It's not about failure, it's about feedback and learning. Have fun with it on your way to discovery. Once you realize the parts that you find difficult, you can research or ask others for help. That brings us to our second focus in getting creative:

Ask for help.

Even the best thinkers and achievers go through life open to new learnings and what other people have to offer them. Realize you do not know everything. Listen to what others have to say, as they may just spark an inspiration within you.

Listen.

Sometimes listening is simply listening to yourself. Find a way to relax and contemplate your life. Einstein went for walks to achieve revelations. Many people meditate. Others will bike, or listen to classical music with their eyes closed, or stare at a plant. Find what works for you.

There is no right or wrong answer.

If you maintain a belief in a right answer, you confine yourself within the bounds of your beliefs of what is right. True creativity allows you to flow beyond your own boundaries. Go beyond your comfort zone. Go beyond logic. See what's out there.

Many solutions come from completely different areas. Challenge yourself and know that confusion precedes learning.

As with most things, practice makes perfect. The more you practice your creativity, the more it will flow and grow.

By Elizabeth Sugar Boese

TRCB.com
