The HP Color LaserJet 5500dn printer using HP Color LaserJet 5500dn toner is one of the printers that HP has built on the 5500 model. This particular version has HP's Jetdirect print server built in to allow for fast Ethernet two sided printing. It also included an additional five hundred sheet feeder tray that is not included in the base model and a stand.

The manufacturer has included 160 MB SDRAM in the base model. If more RAM is needed this can be increased to 544 MB. In addition, a 10 GB hard drive can be added for additional memory.

Print speed has been increased from previous models to 21 ppm for both black or color prints. The first page of either color or black prints will print within 18 seconds if the machine is in the ready state. If it has been a while since the last print and the machine has moved into its power saving mode it can take forty-five seconds for the first print. If the machine has been turned completely off, the first print can be expected within two minutes from a cold start.

The 400 MHz processor included in this machine makes connection to most computers very easy. One complaint that is sometimes heard is that the print driver is slow to install on the networked computers for this printer. However, the speed of prints makes waiting on the installation worthwhile.

The HP Color LaserJet 5500dn printer offers prints that are applied directly to the page in a 600 by 600 dpi for both color and black prints. These prints are both crisp and clean. Colors are bright and realistic.

The printer as sold has two paper trays that hold a total of 600 pages. If more capacity is needed, an additional two trays can be added to bring the total capacity to 1,600 sheets. Envelopes can be fed through the MP tray with stacks of up to 20 envelopes being loaded at once. Paper from legal size to ledger size may be used for printing. In addition, transparencies, labels and card stock can be fed through the machine with little trouble.

The output tray holds 250 sheets of paper as standard equipment on the machine when purchased. It is not possible to add more capacity to this tray and sorters are not available for the printer.

If you need to make two sided prints, you will appreciate the duplex printing capability of this machine. Duplex printing is included as a standard feature of the printer. It does not feature stapling.

HP includes a one year standard on site warranty for this machine. In addition, the package includes full cartridges of all four toners that are needed to start printing immediately. You will find all the software needed to use this printer with either a PC or Mac computer.
