If you are charged with the responsibilityof purchasing a printer for your workgroup, the HP Color LaserJet5550dtn printer makes a great choice. It is very useful in groups thatproduce large volumes of desktop publishing or graphics.

This printerproduces 27 ppm in both black and color prints. In addition, it canprint photographs at a rapid speed. Quality of the prints is rated asgood for photographs to excellent for text with HP Color LaserJet5550dtn toner.

The HP 5550dtn is no small printer. It is certainly not designed to siton a counter or desk, but will require floor space. It is over thirtytwo inches in height and thirty inches wide by twenty four inches indepth. The base includes wheels to roll this 250 pound monster intoplace. It can also be rolled aside for cleaning and maintenance.

Installation of this and many other HP printers is fairly easy. Beginby installing the four toner cartridges and then attach all cords,including the power cord. The printer will then self-install itselfonto each machine on your network. Management of the machine is easyusing the software installed during the installation process.

The color and black prints are produced very rapidly, but the machinetakes somewhat longer to produce color photographs. Speed for thephotos is at 20 seconds for an 8 x 10 photo. Smaller photographs willbe printed at a more rapid speed. The quality of these prints is good.This is remarkable for a machine that produces prints at this speed.

Paper handling may be the only negative of this machine. It has arelatively low duty cycle of only 120,000 sheets each month. That lowcycle may limit its use in large offices or work groups. For this sizeand quality printer a larger duty cycle would have been appreciated.

There is no sorter for the Color LaserJet 5550dtn. There is also nostacker of finishers. They cannot currently be purchased as an option,but HP seems to indicate that they may be available in the future.There is also the possibility of a third party developing them for thisvery popular HP printer.

The printer is capable of handling several sizes of paper. Of courseletter and legal sized prints are an option. However, the super tabloidsized prints are also available. The option allows full bleed prints tobe made on paper that is 11 x 17. This makes the machine a good choicefor groups making graphic prints or photographs.

This HP printer includes more standard features that other members ofthe 5550 family. Some of these features are available as options on theless expensive models, but others are not. Some of the includedfeatures include a duplex print option and an addition paper tray thatraises the capacity to 1,100 sheets.

RAM has also been increased by 128MB. A printer stand is also included. These options may make theprinter even more useful for your work group, so be sure that they areavailable on the model you choose. If you cannot add the options at alater date, be sure to pay for them now.
