They can help tokeep water from entering your home, and can give you a layer of defensewhen a flood happens. Many of these can be put into place as they areneeded, and therefore do not have to ruin the beauty of your home.

One of the main areas you want to protect is your doors. Theseoften are the weakest part of the house during a flood. You can choosefrom many types and styles of barriers to keep the water out. You willneed to determine the type you want based on your physicalcapabilities, the amount of time it would take for you to implementthem, and the flood danger itself.

Waterproof doors can be a good option. A waterproof door can beused. This type has a small tube running around the door. These stillcan allow some water to come in and are not fully water tight, but youneed not be at home for this to work.

You can also choose to get agasket that is permanently installed to the door and inflated by a handpump or air compressor as it is needed, making it slightly better thena water proof door, but it will require you to be available to inflatethe gasket.

Also offered are external barriers that you can place in front ofyour door. You can choose to have the frame affixed to your house forquick installation of the boards, or you can get one that does notrequire the frame. These will not cover the whole door, and often willonly come up no more then halfway but are available in many widths forease of assembly.

When you decide on these barriers, you should also remember to getone for your garage. These are just like the ones for the doors andwill install in the same way. If you have a patio or walkway, then youmay want a portable barrier for those to help block water from gettinginto these areas as well.

Windows can also be protected with a glass flood barrier. Whenthey are used, these windows offer a flexible solution that will notshatter under the water pressure, making your home safe from brokenglass during the cleanup. These do allow for some water to enterthrough the frame, so they are not considered watertight.

Aluminum barriers can also be a great defense against flooding. These are plates of metal that have a welded frame which are assembledto cover the entire perimeter of the house. While these give the best, and most, protection to your home, they are also cost prohibitive tomost people, and the installation can be extremely difficult.

TRCB.com
