He wants them to avoid sexual sins. He also wants them to avoid making mistakes that may change the direction of their lives and prevent them from achieving God plans for themselves. In the accomplishment of this goal, God gives parents the responsibility to teach children about sex.

In today's Proverb, written by Solomon and his wife the message is three fold. The commandments are given by the father. The teaching is given by the mother and the reproofs for discipline are to be received by the children. In other words they should heed the teachings of mom and dad.

The Commandment, "You shall not commit adultery." (Exodus 20:14), should be taught to children. First, there are many children who are not aware of this commandment. If they are un-churched and live in a non-religious home, being exposed to TV, movies, Internet, advertising and the like, they may very well feel that having sex outside of marriage is not a sin. So fathers must make it clear to their children that adultery is a sin and is a sin against God. In addition, the 7th Commandment should be placed in context. Just because politicians, teachers, entertainers, athletes and even people that they know personally are engaging in sex outside of marriage does not mean it is correct.

Proverbs 6 - Teaches us today?

Proverbs 6:23 "(23) For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light; And reproofs for discipline are the way of life,"

Psalm 58:6-9 (Theme: God Will Judge The Wicked). "(6) O God, shatter their teeth in their mouth; Break out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord. (7) Let them flow away like water that runs off; When he aims his arrows, let them be as headless shafts. (8) Let them be as a snail which melts away as it goes along, Like the miscarriages of a woman which never see the sun. (9) Before your pots can feel the fire of thorns, He will sweep them away with a whirlwind, the green and the burning alike."

Today's question. Why children should not engage in sex?
The answer to this question may be taught by the mother. There are hundreds of reasons ranging from sexual commutable diseases to emotional guilt. There is the chance of pregnancy and dealing with complex issues that young minds never consider. Because sex is so prevalent in our society, there are almost daily opportunities to discuss these issues without getting personal, but by discussing choices other people have made. For example, why would a well know personality bring a child into the world without getting married? Or, why would a great political leader destroy his career and family by having an affair?

Solomon himself had an older brother who was conceived in sin by David and Bathsheba. This sin also resulted in the death of Bathsheba's husband, Uriah. Solomon's older brother also died and much pain and hardship was brought upon the house of David. This story is told in 2 Samuel chapters 11-13. It is a story that should be discussed with teenagers so that they will have an appreciation for sexual sin and the consequences thereof.

"Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your companion, and he shall lie with your wives in broad daylight. "Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the sun.'" (2 Samuel 12:11-12).

Dear God, open the minds of our children to receive these commandments, teachings and reproof. Also, please help us to remember that you are a God of grace. Amen.

TRCB.com
