While still useful in the home, its design is suited more to a moderate-to-large network of workstations. The following specifications will be useful in determining whether this machine fulfills your printing needs or can accomplish your business' goals of daily printing needs.

The 8100n is equipped with a 133 MHz MIPS microprocessor and supplemented with a 16 MB SDRAM cache of internal memory. If stronger performance is necessary, the memory is expandable to 192 MB. This should not be necessary, as the factory settings can produce 32 pages of print per minute at 1,200 dpi. Heavy workloads are not an issue, either, as the 8100n is designed to handle 150,000 pages of print per month.

The 8100n is capable of employing a wide variety of printing supplies. The multipurpose feeding tray can handle standard paper, transparencies, labels, envelopes, and other miscellaneous media. The second and third trays automatically detect paper size and adjust to whatever media you load. Optional accessories also allow duplex printing and high-capacity loading.

This is a rather large printer. Standing 21.3" tall, 22.3" wide, and 20.5" across, the 8100n can take up a large area on a desk, and its 112 pound unloaded weight is enough to make it immobile for most individuals. As this is not an ideal arrangement, the 8100n is best mounted on a small table or stand in a relatively open area, especially since it is designed for network access and high traffic and, if appropriately allocated, will likely see use by multiple persons.

With three EIO slots, a parallel port, integrated HP Fast InfraRed Connect, and the HP Jetdirect 600N print server, the 8100n offers a strong selection of connectivity options. Optional HP Jetdirect, Ethernet orFast Ethernet, Token Ring, and LocalTalk services are all offered by the manufacturer. Additional choices can be added via compatible EIO devices, allowing a solution for any networking need.

When bought retail, the 8100n includes several useful accessories. In addition to the printer itself, the package contains all necessary power cables, a free 20,000-page toner cartridge, two 500 sheet loading trays, a 100 sheet multipurpose tray, a User's Guide, free software and installation tools on CD-ROM, and a support information sheet. In the event the purchaser uses a non-Windows operating system, the package will include different software compatible with the owner's equipment.

This printer is relatively affordable, clocking in around $230 retail. A savvy shopper can find refurbished ones for a considerable discount, saving as much as 30%. Combine this manageable purchase price with EconoMode printing for power and toner conservation and you find a printer with reasonable cost, both initially and over time of ownership.

As previously stated, the HP LaserJet 8100n is a specialized office machine with possible home use. While the average home office consumer might not consider the 8100n suitable to their needs, the occasional high-volume home business could find a strong purpose for it. Either way, the 8100n combines affordability with business-class performance, making it a favorite amongst its owners.

TRCB.com
