What to know about the HP Color LaserJetCM1312 Mfp printer comes down to understanding that one will be gettingwhat is known as "all-in-one" or multifunction printer capable of alsoscanning and copying. Additionally, Hewlett-Packard has delivered hisprinter at an attractive price point that makes a competitive with manyother higher-end printers. Its print quality is excellent and it isalso fairly speedy, which is something unusual with multi-functions atthis price point.

This excellent print quality comes, though, at somewhat of a trade-off,which is something that most multifunction printers ask a user toaccept. To get good print quality, one will have to be comfortable witha print speed rate of about 12 pages per minute for black and white andeight pages for color. It's no speed demon but most users looking formultifunction printers probably wouldn't care.

Print resolution as far as the copier is concerned is handled at about600 dpi. Anything that emerges from 1312 will come out looking sharp,crisp, clean and clear. As a copier, the machine can enlarge any copyup to four times its size or reduce it down to one quarter of its sizewith no trouble at all.

From the time the print job is sent to the 1312 until the time thefirst copy emerges is about 25 seconds for a black-and-white about 31seconds for a color copy. This isn't exactly quick, but it's printquality will be uniformly excellent, which is probably whatHewlett-Packard intended for it to do by slowing down its productionuntil the machine could produce something excellent across-the-board.

Keep in mind that the 1312 is a multifunction printer that can alsoscan and copy. This means that Hewlett-Packard has had to designcertain compromises into the model, though it really does do all threeof its functions quite nicely. When one considers that it is reasonablypriced, one will be happy to accept a scanner that can handle 1200 dotsper inch resolution, which is actually above the standard of most othermachines in this price point.

Onboard memory within the 1312 is 120 MB of RAM, and there's no way toupgrade that. This isn't a problem, though, because just about everymultifunction printer sold by Hewlett-Packard or other manufacturerscomes in right at about the same memory capacity. It's also easy enoughto hook this printer up to a PC or Mac through its included high-speedUSB port.

Durability with the 1312 is excellent, and it has a monthly maximumduty cycle of around 30,000 impressions. This means that the 1312 willbe able to copy or print up to 30,000 sheets of paper before it willneed any sort of maintenance. Additionally, it can hold about 150sheets of paper within its tray and will be able to print out on thewide variety of stock such as transparencies and envelopes. It runs offof a number of different Windows or Mac operating systems as well.
