Clip on Microphone Guide

A clip on microphone is a great way to conceal a microphone or go hands free without having to wear a headset. It's basically a small microphone that you can clip on to you. It is usually attached to a transmitter which sends the signal to a receiver. This can be connected to a video camera or to a sound system for broadcasting.

Must Haves for a Clip On Microphone

Strong Clip - most clips work similar to a clothespin. Make sure that the spring holds well enough and is strong enough that your clip on microphone won't fall off.

Omnidirectional - choose this pick-up pattern since you'll need the clip on microphone to pick up the voice from any direction. Since you won't be able to adjust the microphone specifically, pick one that'll be able to capture the voice in a wider angle.

Replaceable clip - select ones which you can replace the clip on and not a clip on microphone that comes in one piece together with the clip. The clip is the part that will get worn out the most. But there are replacement clips which come cheap so you don't have to worry about it just as long as it can be fitted into a replacement unit.

Get a cover - a filter or screen covering the clip on microphone may be very useful so get one with a cover. This can block out and absorb unwanted sounds.

Optional only/Things to watch out for

Wireless unit - you don't really need to buy one that's wireless out of the box. While wireless and Bluetooth are great remember that you can buy the transmitter and receiver units separately.

Flexible clip - these are usually clips that attach to your clothing like a paper clip. The fabric of your clothes is stuck in the middle of a bent piece of plastic or wire. While these have less moving parts (i.e. a spring) it is prone to getting out of shape or breaking off.

High-end - there are clip on microphones which are highly sensitive and very good for recording. These however can be very expensive. For general use, you can get a clip on microphone and just place it near the sound source.

Clip-on Microphone Deals

It may be better to stick to brand new units with these microphones. Sicne they are really small, repairs are extremely hard to do. Refurbished units may still break down easier. Brand new units come quite cheap. Here are some brands you'll find good deals on:

Neewer Clip On - at less than 4 dollars for a pack with 3 of these clip on microphones, what else is there to look for in terms of price? The quality is good and it has gotten great reviews.

Zalman Zm-Mic 1 - at less than $10 it also provides a great deal and has 3 mini clips which helps in securing the clip on microphone.
