Over five hundred years have passed since the first pocket watch was displayed. One of the original versions came from Germany and was the beginning of a popular trend. As time has continued to pass, watch companies began to appear around the world. But one particular company has an exceptional place in the industry - Citizen Watches.

The watch company started its journey in 1918 even before it had a name. In just a little over one decade, it established itself as a prominent corporation. The Mayor of Tokyo felt that every citizen should have an opportunity to own a high quality timepiece, so the name 'Citizen' was selected.

As an industry leader they were only one company within a group of watchmakers. However, it did have quite a different goal; to make wrist watches available to the masses. Inside of a few short years the company completed its first watch factory in Japan. There are over 3,000 employees across the world today, all an integral part of creating and exporting watches to people around the world.

By 1956, they turned the industry upside down as the first Japanese company to create a 'shock resistant' watch. This was no small task; it was a monumental event that created opportunity for an all new level of watch technology. What we take for granted today actually changed the way watches were used. Just three short years later the company performed another first with a watch that resisted water.

These two advances moved them to begin exports to China. Two years later (in 1960), a relationship with another watchmaker was forged in order to distribute to the United States. These two moves, along with its other breakthroughs, grew the company to a worldwide name. Advancements continued to be made with the world's first diving watch, a product that could detect water depth electronically.

As the worldwide company moved forward, watches became a major fashion statement. Watches today sell for thousands of dollars, allowing the buyer to literally wear a work of art. Over the last 90 years, they have kept setting the standard for distinction and advancement. Dedicated artists and creators have produced the thinnest and most widely known liquid crystal display timepiece. Following right behind the LCD technology came a light powered watch that eliminated the need for a battery or winding.

As times have changed the corporation has changed with it. Being the first company to ever receive the "Eco Mark" seal of approval, they distinguish themselves as a pro environment corporation. The 'Eco Mark' symbol recognizes companies as voluntarily seeking ways to make its products more earth friendly. This is done by minimizing or eliminating parts (such as batteries) that may end up in landfills.

When it comes to wrist wear, people frequently have different tastes. Types, size and style are all factors considered before purchasing a watch. For most people, mens watches are an extension of one's personality. Some folks may be looking for an everyday work watch, while some are seeking a work of art costing thousand of dollars. Whatever you have in mind, you will more then likely find what you're looking for with Citizen watches.
