In the past century, women's clothing at the beach became more and more revealing. Gone were the days when women had to be completely covered, and if they did go swimming they had to wear clothes that completely covered their bodies. With the sexual revolution, the idea that clothes should reveal and enhance women's figures became more widespread, and this was especially true with regard to swimwear. A revolution had occurred, and this allowed bikini swimwear to gain popularity. With these designs, very little, seemingly, was left to the imagination. And yet, each pattern, when carefully chosen, can accentuate the strengths in a woman's figure.
Let us consider, for example, the one piece swimsuit. Some women would not wish to expose their midriffs if they had scars on it. In this case, they would want to wear a one piece design which would completely cover their bellies. A single piece swimsuit is preferred to a bikini when a woman wants to cover more of her body. Yet, these can also be revealing, depending on how low the neckline is, and how much of the thighs and back it reveals. The one piece is preferable for women who are full bodied, but just because they are not slim and svelte, it need not mean that they cannot look sexy in swimwear. These designs are perfect for them.
For those who are fit, the bikini is a style that they can consider depending on how comfortable they are exposing much of their bodies. The bikini consists of a top and bottom piece. But how much it covers is all up to the wearer to decide. If an individual is totally free with their body they might wear a thong, for example, which would expose much of the buttocks to public view. A person would have to be extremely confident in their body to wear this, and it would be better worn in areas where others are likely to also wear such items, in order to divert undo attention.
A tank suit is a pattern which looks sporty. Often it looks akin to something a scuba diver might wear, but without arms and legs, and with (sometimes) a plunging neckline. This is a cute design and is ideal for fun and frolic at the beach.
Skirted designs are based on the miniskirt. While these skirt lengths would be impossible to wear on streets without causing controversy, on a beach or in the pool they are perfectly acceptable. They are frilly in nature, with lots of pleats and folds in them.
A hybrid between the one piece and bikini, the monokini combines the best of both worlds. It is a single piece item, but it has large pieces of material missing from it, allowing the wearer to reveal those body parts which she desires to. Backs, hips, midriffs are exposed, depending on what one chooses. It need not be symmetrical; one side can be cut to reveal a hip, for example, while the other side is covered.
The widespread popularity of swimwear has allowed swimwear designers to gain reputations in their own rights, rather than being considered an inferior part of the fashion industry. Designers like Body Glove are well known. Also, established fashion designers who made their reputations designing conventional clothing have entered the swimwear industry. Tommy Hilfiger is one well know example.
The Swimwear industry has come a long way in the past century, and the radical developments with bikinis even within the last ten years show that even more changes remain to come.
