The University of Georgia has nineteen athletic teams. Like most universities, it fields teams in baseball, football, and basketball. Additional programs include mens and womens team in soccer, gymnastics, volleyball, cross-country, track, tennis, swimming and diving, and golf.

As of 2007, Georgia Bulldogs have accumulated 127 Southeastern Conference titles and 31 team national championships. Although the origin of the athletic program of the university took place in the early 1900s, they did not have the nickname yet. That happened when a sports journalist wrote that the name Bulldog is fitting because it sounded dignified. The nickname stuck, and now refers to all the various teams of the university.

The university takes pride in its football team, which was started back in 1892. The football team has a rich history. During the same year, they met the Auburn University Tigers where the Tigers defeated them. This paved way for the birth of the South's Oldest Rivalry.

One of the most successful Bulldog gridiron coaches was Vince Dooley. He brought the team to the National Championship in 1980, and earned the Coach of the Year title during the same year. During his leadership, the Bulldogs were able to bring home six Southeastern Conference titles.

Even with the pride Dooley brought to the university, he also drew controversy. He had a much-publicized feud with university president Michael Adams in 2003. Dooley was the athletic director of the university at that time. The root cause of the scandalous misunderstanding was the refusal of Adams to renew his contract.

Their men's tennis team has also been phenomenal. The team is one of the best in the country, thanks to the leadership of Dan Magill. Magill was a local hero in Georgia, but his contributions were not limited to tennis alone. He had made major contributions to the sports program of the university in general.

Georgia success did not stop when Magill left the team; his successor, Manuel Diaz also did well. All throughout the existence of the team, they have conquered the tennis national championship eight times. This includes their back-to-back wins in 2007 and 2008.

Bulldog success in gymnastics is also worth mentioning. The team started in 1981 and Rick Walton was their head coach. Suzanne Yoculan took over in 1983. Under her leadership, UGA has dominated the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship, having brought home nine titles.

Georgia Bulldogs are also a strong force in golf, particularly the men's golf team. This squad alone has bagged the conference titles twenty-six times.

The Georgia basketball team also holds a remarkable history. Under the leadership of Coach Andy Landers, the women's team has won several SEC championships for the regular season and several conference tournament titles. The men's team also had some great seasons, most recently in 2008.

The University of Georgia has several reasons to celebrate. Their representatives to various sport has made Georgia Bulldogs merchandise and gear popular. The pride their athletes bring to the university surely makes the rest of the institution proud.
Summary:

The Georgia Bulldogs have brought several honors to the university through its various teams. The students and the rest of university have plenty of reason to cheer.

Freddie Brister writes extensively about college football and the SEC. He enjoys watching the aggressiveness of the Georgia Bulldogs football team and the great athletes that play for them. Because of their large fan base, and strong winning tradition, Georgia Bulldogs gear is popular in Athens, Georgia and all over the world.
