How are you stopping your new car? What type of brakes are used in the formula 1? What are the newest experiences in the progress of braking systems? And how can we use this information to make our bikes safer?

“... we are developing further on disc brakes because they have the best performance so far. We also experiment with rotors made out of a special super light material and with a revolutionary type of brake pads to get better performance and to manage known issues ...”

This is what the actual state of progress is. So disc brakes are the state of the art at the moment. Nearly every new car has disc brakes, all the formula 1 guys use the disc brake system and also the bikes are getting modern with using disc brakes.

Here are only a few benefits of disc brakes:

  • Of course the performance. It is the most important thing of a braking system. In an emergency situation you have to stop your vehicle immediately to avoid a crash or even more.
  • Easy to change. You can even do it by yourself if you try. But don't do it when you really don't know what you are doing. This can be very risky.
  • Easy to upgrade. As you read above the development is going on so if there is a new part on the market you can easily upgrade your system without spending money for a completely new one.

To be more specific I'll explain you the difference between rim brakes known as V-brakes and mtb disc brakes of a bicycle.

Rim brakes will brake on the rim of a bike's wheel. The main problem is that the rim will get dirty while riding your bike. This will reduce the performance of your braking system. By riding off road the wheel can bounce against the brake pad and this is bad.

The disc brakes are installed in the middle of the wheel. Mud can't rally reach so high to make the rotor dirty. Also the wheel is fixed in the middle and so there the disc won't bounce against the pad. You will always have high performance with your disc brakes.

You can see that disc brakes becoming more and more popular by this time no matter for what vehicle. So upgrade now if you haven't already.
