In a recent interview, charismatic educator Geoffrey Canada spoke frankly about the severe shortage of Americans who hold STEM degrees. STEM degrees are the backbone of research and development, education, economic growth, and scientific innovation in America and around the world. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Technology pervades practically every aspect of our lives and especially our careers. It’s amazing the leaps and bounds technology has made over the past 60 years and it’s become evident that obtaining a career in computer science can be very profitable for the individual.

When talking about animation one of the least recognized position outside of the field is the layout and background artists. Inside the profession though, it’s quite another story.

When a studio decided to make an animated show or movie, two of the first people a director hires are a story editor and a storyboard artist. They are two people he truly needs to turn what was previously a pitch into a full blown production.

It’s impossible for some experiment or field study to be done without a technician behind the dials and most often that tech has a degree in science. Whether it’s the latest green tech innovation or even someone taking your blood and an x-ray, the person doing it is one.

“Biologists learn how living things work”, the American Institute of Biological Sciences says of its members, “how they interact with one another, and how they evolve…Their work increases our understanding about the natural world in which we live and helps us address issues…such as environmental depletion, threats to human health, and maintaining viable and abundant food supplies.” 

The computer manufacturing industry was hit by the recent recession. On the plus side, industry projections say it’s going to be one of the first to recover, maybe during the second quarter of 2010. The reason for this is the industry’s ability to reinvent itself through new technology, such as the recent eReaders and iPads.

In the history of inventions, most people probably never heard of Martin Cooper. An electrical engineer at Motorola in the 1960s, and a fan of Star Trek, what fascinated him was Trek’s communicators. So he invented the first cell phone. Engineers are personnel, most often with at least science degrees, who apply the principles of science (or science fiction) to develop economical solutions to technical problems.

Most people know when it comes to computers that hardware is the actual physical machine and software is the programming that makes a computer run. This is why a computer software engineer (usually called computer engineers) end up working on anything that has a microchip in it. This means anything as small as a smart phone to as big as the NASA space station.

There are those who think being a computer engineer is a career for a kid with a closet full of energy drinks and Doritos. Nothing could be further from the truth. To be more precise, computer software engineering is one of the fastest growing career paths of this century.
